Region field set for boys, girls soccer

GRAYSON — The draws for the 16th Region boys and girls soccer tournaments took place on Saturday at Kentucky Christian University.

In boys, East Carter, the 62nd District champion, and 63rd District winner Russell drew first-round byes. Russell meets 61st District runner-up Fleming County or 62nd runner-up Greenup County (who square off at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals) at 6 p.m. Thursday, and East takes on 63rd runner-up Boyd County or 61st champion Rowan County — who play at 8 p.m. Tuesday — in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday.

The championship is at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Russell’s boys (10-11) have peaked at the right time —  beating Ashland and Boyd County in the district reversed a 1-5 nightmare — and Russell coach Joe Grizzle says junior Patrick Soucy is a major reason why.

East split its last six matches.

Fleming County is in despite its 4-16 record because the Panthers beat Bath County last Tuesday, while Greenup County defeated West Carter before falling to East.

Boyd County (10-7-1) has split its last six matches.

East also drew a first-round bye in the girls tournament that begins Monday at Rowan County; the 62nd District champions Lady Raiders meet either 61st runner-up Fleming County (6-12-2) or 63rd runner-up Russell (13-8) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday (the Lady Panthers and Lady Devils meet at 6 p.m. Monday).

The goal for any team that plays East should be containing junior midfielder Macy Dyer. She also runs cross country and scored her 24th goal in yesterday's 6-0 win over Greenup County.

Rowan County, the 61st titlist, drew the other girls first-round bye and meets either 62nd runner-up Greenup County or 63rd champion Ashland at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Musketeers and LadyCats square off at 8 p.m. Monday.

Next to East, Ashland is the hottest team still playing — the LadyCats are 5-0-2 over their last seven games. The championship is at 2 p.m. Saturday.
