Peterson takes over KCU football

Former coach Furrey accepts position to lead Marshall’s receivers

GRAYSON — Kentucky Christian University has a new head football coach.

The Knights appointed Gene Peterson to the position after former coach Mike Furrey left to become the receivers coach at Marshall University.

Peterson has been an assistant for KCU recently, but the biggest chunk of his 30-year coaching career was spent at Fleming County, where he was with the Panthers for 26 years.

The Knights are coming off a 7-4 season, and competed well inside the solid NAIA Mid-South Conference.

“I am very excited to become the head football coach at Kentucky Christian University, and proud to lead a football team that helps promote the university’s values of Christ, character and career,” Peterson said. “I am very blessed to be surrounded with a great staff, supportive administration, and fantastic student-athletes.”

Said Bruce Dixon, KCU’s athletic director: “It is telling that the assistant coaches were unanimous in their support of Coach Peterson as the next head coach at KCU and committed to maintaining continuity among the coaching staff.”

Peterson led Fleming County to Eastern Kentucky Conference championships in 2001, ’04, ’06 and ’09. He was EKC Coach of the Year in 2001, ’04 and ’09. He also guided the Panthers to a district title in 2001.

Peterson is a Marion County native.

Furrey, a former NFL receiver, headed up the Knights for two seasons.
