PRESTONSBURG —
It didn’t start well for the Russell-Flatwoods 11-12 year-old All-Star Baseball team. It didn’t end well either.
Russell-Flatwoods lost 11-1 in the state semifinals to Marion County on Thursday in a four inning game.
It all started badly for the Russell-Flatwoods team when Chaz Whitt would hit a pop fly foul in the first inning.
While running the ball out, Whitt would run into the Marion County pitcher and would be ruled out.
“I have never seen that happen before,” said Russell-Flatwoods coach Brent Belvins. “This truly was one of those games where we couldn’t catch any breaks.”
Marion County would outhit Russell-Flatwoods 13-5.
Russell-Flatwoods had trouble touching Marion County pitching all night, coming up empty on eight strikeouts.
Marion County though had no trouble at all, including on the second pitch of the game when the leadoff hitter hit a home run.
The only time Russell-Flatwoods would score was on a Whitt solo home run.
The only other Russell-Flatwoods offensive highlight was from Seth Atkins who had two hits in the game.
With the season over, there is disappointment that his team didn’t go farther, but for Blevins a final four appearence is still something to be proud of.
“I’m very proud of this team,” he said. “This was a great season and it’s a huge accomplishment to get to the state semifinals.”
