Brewer's crew rolls

WESTWOOD — Chris Brewer knows a thing or two about doing some heavy lifting.

Over the offseason, the senior spent four days a week in the gym with a personal trainer working on his strength, not to mention the five other workouts he did with his Fairview teammates.

Known as a powerful runner coming into the season, much of Brewer’s time was spent trying to not only improve his strength but also his speed.

One of the most common exercises?

Pulling a heavily weighted sled.

So it was no surprise Friday night to see the 5-foot-10, 235-pound running back continuously shrugging off defenders before breaking away from the pack with his newfound quickness in Fairview’s 42-0 season-opening win over visiting West Carter.

“I lost a lot of fat in the offseason. I am so much faster this year,” said Brewer, who accounted for 109 yards on nine carries on the night. “(The workouts) were really hard, but it was all worth it.”

No one play demonstrated the newest element of Brewer’s game better than his 41-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. He took an inside handoff, but quickly made a move to the outside and outpaced two Comet defenders to the end zone for the score, his second of two on the night.

“He is still as strong as an ox, but he is 15 pounds lighter,” Fairview coach Nathan McPeek said. “He is in great shape. He looks like it is Week 6 and it is Week 0.”

Not only will Brewer be counted on to produce running the ball, but he is also one of the team’s captains and is expected to help lead a very young Eagle bunch, which showed some signs of that youth against West Carter despite the lopsided margin.

Fairview (1-0) turned it over four times and racked up seven penalites, most of which came after they built up a 32-0 advantage.

“We were a little sloppy and have a lot of things to fix,” McPeek said. “We kind of looked at the scoreboard because we are a younger team, and we can’t do that and be successful.”

Brewer said he feels it is part of his duty to keep the younger players focused during the game, no matter the score.

“I just tell them they have to keep their head in the game, because if we start to get a big head they will come from behind and get us.”

There was no coming from behind for West Carter, as the early hole was just too much.

Many of the Comets were seeing their first varsity action, and it didn’t take them long to see how different the game is on Friday nights.

After a three-and-out on its first offensive possession, West Carter was forced to punt. That punt was quickly turned into six points by Devon Turner, who picked it up on one bounce before going off to the races. Turner found paydirt two more times on the night, once from four yards out and the other from 19.

“That was pretty rough,” West Carter coach Kevin Brown said. “But you have to learn from the bad things as well as the good.”

While getting off to a poor start, the Comets did seem to settle down in the second half and were able to hold Fairview to just six points.

“We didn’t just lay down in the second half,” Brown said. “We kept fighting and trying to do what we can do, but they are young and we are going to get better.”

Last year’s Fairview defense was outstanding, holding opponents to just under 10 points a game, and this year’s unit is off to another great start. The Eagles held West Carter to just 66 yards of total offense and did not give up a first down until the 4:42 mark of the second quarter.
