RUSSELL —
The running game once again shined for Russell as the Red Devils gained more than 300 yards on the ground en route to a 34-6 victory over West Carter at Henry R. Evans Stadium Friday.
Led by Troy Huffine, Googie Hayes and Bryant Cathey, the Red Devils kept it on the ground most of the night. Each of the trio found the end zone early in the first half.
“Huffine is the one-, two-, three-yard kind of guy down close to the goal line. He’s a little bit stronger,” said Russell coach Ivan McGlone.
Russell (3-2) got off to the fast start it wanted, getting 14 points in the first 5:49 of the game, with Huffine scoring the first of his two touchdowns in the first. Cathey scored from 14 yards out.
In the beginning of the second quarter, Huffine scored again to make it 21-0. In their only other possession in the second, the Red Devils had a methodical, 10-play, 78-yard drive that ended with the Hayes touchdown with 39.3 seconds remaining in the first half.
It was much of the same the second half. Russell’s first possession of the third quarter was a 14-play, 72-yard drive capped off by a Hayes 4-yard TD to make it 34-0 Red Devils.
“Googie had, I thought, an outstanding game,” McGlone said. “He ran the ball well, played pretty good defense.”
Hayes finished with 89 yards on the ground, Huffine finished with 49 and Cathey chipped in 46.
West Carter coach Kevin Brown was very complimentary of the Red Devil running game.
“They’re going to do that, no matter who they play,” Brown said.
“I think Russell is a solid team. From what I’ve seen, they’re the best team in the district.”
The Comets (0-5) scored their only touchdown of the game with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter, a Braden Brown 23-yard keeper.
“I know West is a little young, but they execute well,” McGlone said. “When they mature, they’ll probably be pretty good.”
With the win, Russell improved to 1-0 in Class 3A, District 6 and 20-0 in the series against West Carter.
