Morehead —
The Boys 16th Region Tournament begins Tuesday with 64th District champion Ashland facing off against 62nd runner-up West Carter at 6 p.m. at Morehead State's Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
The second game pits 61st champions Fleming County and Lewis County, the 63rd runner-up.
On Wednesday, first round action resumes with Russell (63rd champs) and Boyd County, the 64th runner-up. Morgan County and Rowan County square off at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars won the 62nd District, while two-time defending champions Vikings come in as 61st runners-up.
The semifinals are slated for Thursday at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The championship is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
Rowan County coach Shawn Thacker said while his team is inexperienced, he feels like the Vikings have the right mindset to earn a third straight region title.
“We've got a shot,” he said. “We've felt that way for a while now.”
West Carter just recently lost to Ashland, 63-50, at Anderson Gym.
Lewis County took Fleming County to overtime before the Panthers prevailed earlier this month.
Russell and Boyd County split their meetings, with the Lions having a 79-59 win in the second clash.
