Well, I totally redeemed myself! After a miserable 0-4 start, I’ve made it back to .500 with a 4-0 week, including the upset pick of the Jets.
Here’s a question for everybody: What’s the most attractive matchup for the Super Bowl? Would you rather see Colts-Saints, Jets-Saints, Colts-Vikings or Jets-Vikings?
There are storylines with each matchup:
‰Colts-Saints: Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will go against his father’s former team — on which Archie Manning accounted as the brightest spot on some bad Saints teams in the 1970s. Plus he will match up against one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league right now, Drew Brees.
The last time both No. 1 seeds made it to the Super Bowl was 1993-94, when Dallas beat Buffalo.
In 2006, the Colts won the Super Bowl in Miami, where it will take place this year.
‰Jets-Saints: Probably the least appealing of the four, but it would be the NFL’s best defense versus the NFL’s highest-scoring offense. Can the Brees/Reggie Bush show continue against the hard-nosed Jets? Darrelle Revis vs. Marques Colston would be quite an individual matchup. Brees may try to attack safeties Jim Leonhard and Kerry Rhodes if this would happen. Also, Saints middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma would face the team that drafted him.
‰Colts-Vikings: Let’s see... Manning and Brett Favre. Need I say more? Manning tries to add another layer of cement onto his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, with his second career Super Bowl win. Favre would also attempt to earn his second career Super Bowl victory, possibly going out on top in his last career game. While Favre owns all the records, Manning could be his biggest active threat.
‰Jets-Vikings: Favre would go against his former team, with which he spent just one season. The Vikings’ front seven and the Jets’ offensive line would make for a great battle in the trenches. Plus, these are two of the best mascots/no. 1 fans in the NFL — are you taking Fireman Ed or Ragnar the Viking?
Here’s what I think will happen on Sunday:
Jets-Colts
The clock strikes midnight. Cinderella’s run ends here. Rex Ryan will have to make some amendments to his team’s itinerary after this one, because the Colts are simply too good for the Jets.
Don’t look back to Week 16 for any help in forecasting this game. Even if you do, you’ll see that the Colts were in control of that game until Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell opened the floodgates, sitting his starters two by two.
The Colts are the masters of methodically chipping away at teams until they have to finally raise the white flag. The Jets won’t surrender easily, but, with the Jets playing a much better defense this week, rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez will finally make some fatal mistakes for his team.
Rookie quarterbacks don’t have a remarkable history in conference championship games, with most recent examples like Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger serving as proof. Flacco was 13-for-30 passing with three interceptions in last season’s AFC Championship loss to the Steelers. Roethlisberger threw three picks in the Steelers’ 41-27 AFC Championship loss to the Patriots in January 2005.
It’s not as if the Colts have blown out many teams this year, so I do see the Jets keeping it fairly close throughout, with Indianapolis ultimately pulling away in front of the home crowd, who is back in full support of its team after being upset with the lack of effort to achieve an undefeated season.
Snyder’s Pick: Colts 21, Jets 10.
Vikings-Saints
The first-ever NFC Championship game in the Louisiana Superdome will be just that — super.
The Saints bring the closest thing to a spread offense as you’ll see in the NFL, while the Vikings’ defense will try to put immense pressure on Brees.
If the Vikings can get through the Saints’ offensive line with regularity, the edge goes to the Vikings. If not, Brees might have enough to beat them, especially if Bush has another explosive effort similar to last week.
The Vikings may be the most complete team in the NFL, but the running game has now slid to become one of the weaker points of the team — an odd thing to perceive with Adrian Peterson carrying the load. Peterson has recorded just three 100-yard rushing games this season, and, to take some tension off of the 40-year-old Favre’s shoulders, he’ll need to get his motor running.
Favre has been sensational this season, but, as he did just two seasons ago in what many thought was his final career game with the Packers (NFC Championship loss to the Giants), Favre will come up just short again in a rowdy environment.
The Mardi Gras Magic continues.
Snyder’s Pick: Saints 31, Vikings 24.
