OLIVE HILL — Rivalry games aren’t always guaranteed to be pretty.
In fact, in the case of East Carter and West Carter, most of them aren’t.
The Comets and Raiders continued that trend Friday night at West Carter’s Harold L. Holbrook Athletic Complex, with East Carter emerging on top, 58-48.
East Carter (13-4) has won four straight in the series, which it leads 80-34 overall, but the outcome was not assured until late in the game.
West Carter (5-11) played solid defense in the first half, holding East Carter to a subpar 8-for-25 clip from the floor. The Comets took a 21-19 into halftime.
East Carter senior Colt Barnhill quickly changed the outlook of the game as he hit three baskets in a row, including a 3-pointer on which he was fouled. He missed the free throw, but the Raiders held a 26-23 advantage, one they would never seize.
“It’s really good to see how we did respond coming out of halftime,” said East Carter coach Brandon Baker. “If we play like that, we’re going to create some things for us from defense to offense.”
Transition buckets were imminent for the Raiders, as they capitalized on several opportunities in the third quarter, many of which were created by seven turnovers by the Comets in the segment.
“It wasn’t like our turnovers came in pressure situations,” said West Carter coach Jeremy Webb. “Whenever you can’t pass and catch (the basketball) for an eight-minute stretch, you’re going to have a tough time winning games.”
Winning games has been a struggle for West Carter of late, as the Comets have lost 10 of their last 11 against an above-average string of opponents. During much of that stretch, though, West Carter has been without its leading scorer, Aaron Rayburn. Rayburn, a junior, has been cleared to practice and will likely return to game action in the next 10 days, according to Webb.
With Rayburn’s absence, sophomore Derek Lawson has had to carry more weight. The 6-foot-2 forward posted a double-double, with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and had the assignment of guarding Barnhill. Barnhill did finish with 20 points and nine boards, but Webb was pleased with Lawson’s effort on both ends of the court.
“He’s been drawing the other team’s best player all year long,” Webb said of Lawson. “We didn’t want to allow (Barnhill) to catch on the block. Lawson did a good job for us.”
Barnhill was forced to take a few shots from 15 feet and farther, but that is an aspect of his game that he has worked on.
“He’s taking a beating down low,” Baker said. “He gets bodied up inside, but he can step up and make perimeter shots. He can take what the defense gives him.”
Leading 34-31, Baker decided to bring senior Koty Buck, who got into first-half foul trouble, off the bench. Buck answered the call with back-to-back long balls from the left wing, giving East Carter a 40-31 lead.
The Raiders had issues putting the Comets away, though, thanks to feisty West Carter defense and trouble at the free-throw line. East Carter shot just 13-for-24 from the charity stripe in the final period, but made six of their final eight attempts to ice it.
Harrison Bond chipped in 12 points for West Carter, while freshman Kyle Brown was held to six points.
East Carter senior Kyle Bair contributed 14 points in the Raiders’ third defeat of West Carter this season.
