I wonder who felt worse on Monday morning: a) Andre Caldwell, whose fumble led to Oakland’s game-winning field goal against the Bengals; b) Hank Poteat, the Browns defensive back who was called for pass interference on Detroit’s Hail Mary pass that led to the eventual winning touchdown; c) Browns coach Eric Mangini, who took a timeout that allowed injured quarterback Matt Stafford to step into Detroit Lion lore forever; or d) fans of the Browns and Lions.
Answer: All of the above.
‰Here’s a note to Browns management: Only a half-full (or was that half-empty?) stadium came out to watch the Lions and Browns on Sunday in Detroit. That could be the Ghost of Football Future for Cleveland if they’re not careful. The message is clear: Nobody wants to watch a loser.
‰Browns rookie Chris Jennings had a noteworthy performance with 36 yards rushing on 10 carries and 38 yards receiving on five catches against the Lions. He had a long run of 16 yards and a reception of 19 yards. The former Fairview All-State player is proving he belongs in the NFL.
‰One guy who didn’t feel bad about the results from last weekend was Mark Snyder after Marshall defeated SMU 34-31 to become bowl eligible. The Thundering Herd’s embattled coach needed a win about as badly as Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis. Talk about feeling bad.
‰Marshall appears a sure bet to play in the EagleBank Classic in Washington, D.C., against Bowling Green, a former MAC opponent that the Herd has already beaten once this season. That may not have much national appeal but for bowl-starved Herd fans, the trip to the capitol is fine with them. Marshall hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2004. They would have lined up against Popcorn State — UK basketball coach John Calipari’s favorite name for a pushover — to play in a bowl game, if necessary.
Hey, maybe the JiffyPop Bowl still has an opening?
‰Kentucky’s Big Blue Nation is giddy about what happened last weekend in basketball and football. Who can blame them? The first victory “Between the Hedges” since 1977 and Coach Cal’s team is looking like one that may be a March Monster. How can it get any better?
‰A win over Tennessee on Saturday might do it.
‰Kentucky’s win over Georgia was almost surreal. It was like Georgia was playing the role of Kentucky with the football near the goal line and the late interception. The Bulldogs took a page out of the Wildcats’ old playbook —– the one that Rich Brooks has apparently discarded. I guess the Law of Averages does come into play eventually, even in college football.
‰And even against Tennessee?
‰I wonder if Perry Stevenson is wondering what the future looks like for him in UK blue. After watching the
early games, the Cat newcomers in the post — DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton — appear to be way ahead of him. And Patrick Patterson may be the hardest-working post man in college basketball. I love watching that guy play. Stevenson is a good talent, but it may take some time for him to grasp this wildly entertaining offensive style.
‰And can I get an amen for John Wall, the dazzling freshman point guard who makes everything look sooooo easy. Enjoy watching Wall for a season. That’s all he promised and that’s all UK fans will get. But it could be a Wall-derful season.
‰I have three words UK basketball fans in this part of Kentucky are starting to loathe: Fox Sports South.
‰By the way, if you have Dish Network, tonight’s game in the Cancun Classic is on Channel 152 (either 7:30 or 9:30 depending on the outcome of Tuesday night’s game), which is CBS Sports.
