FLEMINGSBURG —
Seth Atkins doesn't want to be at Fleming County Recreation Park today.
He has no choice. The Russell-Flatwoods second baseman and friends have to come back and finish its Little League age 11-12 District 6 tournament game against Fleming County at 7 p.m.
Nonstop lightning forced postponement of Sunday's game with Russell-Flatwoods ahead, 14-5, with Fleming County hitting in the bottom of the fourth inning. It will be resumed from that point.
Neither Russell-Flatwoods coach Brent Blevins nor Fleming County's Randy Crump thought continuing the game would affect their pitching.
“My main plan is to hit the ball and score runs,” Crump said.
Sunday, it was Russell-Flatwoods doing both early and often – 14 hits, including six for extra bases.
Atkins may prefer to stay in Greenup County, but he was a major reason his team took off to an 8-0 lead after two innings – he hit two two run home runs off Fleming County's Harrison Fryman.
Blevins didn't single out Atkins for at least one good reason – eight of nine starters had at least one hit. Third baseman Wes Patterson hit two doubles, shortstop Tray Gillum added a triple, and first baseman Grant Bates had a double.
“Consistently they've hit the ball well the whole tournament,” Blevins said.
Fleming County's offense came in the third. Three singles and two errors became five runs.
Atkins was planning to go swimming today. Instead …
“We'll probably have practice,” he said.
