ASHLAND —
The 12th annual Bennett Lake Memorial Junior Championships open today at 5 p.m. on the Ashland Tennis Center outdoor courts.
The Kentucky level 3 event has 32 players from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. Age groups include 16s, 14s, 12s and 10s.
Except for Girls 12s, which has 11 entries, the other singles divisions will use a round-robin format to guarantee players at least two matches.
“Including singles and doubles, we have over 50 entries,” said ATC manager Jerry Groce. “That’s up a little bit from last year.”
Three area players who have already enjoyed success on the high school level will battle it out in Boys 16s.
Ashland’s Max Meade won the West Virginia Class AA/A singles championship during the spring. Matthew Eastham, from Flatwoods, was a key member of Russell’s 16th Region and Section 4 title-winning teams, while Louisa’s Cole McCreary repeated as singles champ in the 15th Region.
Brooklyn Leslie of South Shore is seeded No. 1 in the Girls 12s. Catlettsburg’s Jessica Burton received the No. 2 seed.
The bulk of the matches are scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
