ASHLAND —
Welcome to district play in Kentucky, where the next few weeks are this state’s high school football version of the show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” where the points don’t matter.
All right, that’s a bit of a stretch I guess.
But they would mean a whole heck of a lot more if the KHSAA would change the current playoff format.
Teams could be playing for survival within the confines of playoff contention rather than settling for (in most cases) an easily attained postseason berth.
Ah well, I’ve expressed my thoughts before on the subject.
Not all area teams start district play this week. In any case, I don’t envision to many close ones tonight.
There is a 30 percent chance of rain in the forecast, and 100 percent chance of me being perfect this week.
Let’s run down the slate ...
Ashland 47, Rowan County 21: Too much firepower and strength, and don’t think that Ashland has totally forgotten about that loss to Ironton. That adds more fuel to the fire. Vikings may play with the Tomcats for a half.
Johnson Central 38, Boyd County 14: The Lions had trouble against the running attack of Russell last week. While there is no more J.J. Jude to wreak havoc on Boyd, the Golden Eagles can still cleat up some ground.
Fairview 50, Greenup County 14: The Musketeers won’t get shut out as they did against Grant County, but Fairview will be much further from getting shut out.
Fleming County 37, Lewis County 20: Get ready for some passing. Maybe a lot of passing. The Panthers will be doing more scoring though.
Mason County 22, East Carter 17: The Raiders were right with the Royals a year ago, and they may just pull off the upset here. However, Mason County’s two close losses to Montgomery County and Rowan County have me leaning toward the Royals.
Pineville 28, Paintsville 21: More points are scored than players dressed here. And that doesn’t mean shootout.
Ironton 40, Portsmouth 16: It’s the longest-standing rivalry around, and it’s been extremely tight throughout the series (55-54-8, advantage Ironton). The Fighting Tigers are clearly the better team this year.
Raceland 48, Lawrence County 28: Both teams can put up points, which should make this game a far cry from what it was a year ago (14-12 Raceland). The Rams are too multi-dimensional on offense.
Russell 31, West Carter 7: Russell will cruise against the young Comets.
