MONDAY MORNING QB: QB’s glad Week 6 is a wrap, so he raps

ASHLAND — Considering Friday night's disparity and utter atrocity in some cases, I thought I would go ahead and match the absurdity of some of the scores we saw this past weekend.

So, with that, here goes the Monday Morning Quarterback Rap, which portrays the attitude of a winning football team.

Riddle me this, riddle me that.

The season could end at the drop of a hat.

Let's rise up this fall, and end all the chatter.

You gotta dig down deep, and resolve all the matters.

'Cause November's approaching, and I ain't talking turkey.

Time to take care of business, nah, this picture ain't murky.

Strap on those helmets yo, and put on those pads.

'Cause this could be the year like we ain't never had.

In the words of the Reverend Al Sharpton in the movie Mister Deeds, "Nice rhyme, nice rhyme."

Got any since?

‰Ashland has not shut out two district opponents in the same season since ... 2002. Then a Class 3A team, Ashland’s defense stamped zeroes onto both Magoffin County and Greenup County 10 years ago in coach Larry Hall’s final season at the helm.

The Tomcats are off to an ideal start if they want to try to match that feat this fall. Rowan County got nothing across the goal line on Friday night in a 48-0 contest.

‰Johnson Central has not played an Ohio team since ... 2007. During that 10-3 season, the Golden Eagles beat South Point and Wheelersburg by a combined total of 48-3. They host Ironton on Friday in the two schools’ first meeting.

‰Fairview had not started three consecutive seasons at 5-0 since ... ever. Until now, that is. In fact, the Eagles had never put up back-to-back 5-0 starts before they did so in 2010 and 2011.

Helmet Stickers

Four stickers: Elijah King (Fairview), Quinton Baker (Ashland), Adam Elkins (Raceland).

A week after his coach called him a Division I-caliber player, Elijah King's encore performance proved enough to at least keep an eye on him. Granted, Greenup County is struggling mightily, but King's five-touchdown, 226-total yard effort is no joke.

Quinton Baker the TD Maker was at it again. It wasn't his seven yards per carry or four TDs that earned one "QB" four stickers from this QB. It was his undying will to get past that goal line, and the shaking and shedding of tacklers with ostensible effortlessness.

Adam Elkins connected with six different receivers for 14 completions and 238 yards. His two interceptions were clearly overshadowed by an outstanding overall performance that also included a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Three: Chris Brewer (Fairview), Cade O'Bryan (Ashland), Daymion Belcher (Johnson Central), Daylin Beach (Raceland).

Two: Googie Hayes (Russell), Connor Messer (Raceland), Josh Dillon (Johnson Central), Amber Delcourt (Raceland). Delcourt not only kicked a few extra points for her team on Friday but was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime. How cool is that?

One: Aaron Elam (Ashland), Rodney Vance (Raceland), Ricky Goble (Lawrence County), Slater Swift (Ashland), Zack Litteral (Raceland).

QB's Quiz

Brandon Caniff was our Lucky Fan No. 6 after correctly answering the QB's question a week ago.

Caniff took advantage of an easy-picking week and had a perfect high school prediction record.

Last week’s question: Five northeastern Kentucky teams (of the 13 included in the preview issue) have held a position in the Associated Press Top 10 poll for 80 or more total weeks in their history. Name at least four of them.

Answer: Russell (176), Ashland (141), Raceland (92), Paintsville (91) and Lawrence County (85). All parenthesized numbers indicate the total weeks before the start of this season.

This week's question: What was the last northeastern Kentucky school to advance to its respective class’s regional final round despite owning a losing record? Just for a fun bonus, in what year did it occur?

The first person to correctly answer the question (phone, email Twitter or “The Independent”Facebook page) will be Lucky Fan 7 and will be able to pick games with the staff this week.

Did you miss it? The following are area scores from Friday night: Ashland 48, Rowan County 0; Johnson Central 37, Boyd County 6; Fairview 72, Greenup County 0; Fleming County 43, Lewis County 0; Mason County 34, East Carter 21; Ironton 61, Portsmouth 34; Raceland 54, Lawrence County 14; Russell 34, West Carter 6; Pineville 40, Paintsville 15.

Noteworthy

Morgan County improved its record to 5-0 with a 28-6 defeat of Middlesboro. The Cougars, who have outscored opponents by an average of 32.4 points per game, play host to Jackson County this coming Friday. It looks as if the Oct. 12 meeting between Morgan County and Breathitt County will be a battle of undefeateds.
