RACELAND —
The Raceland Rams started fast and didn’t look back.
Tyler Farley unleashed a bomb to Marcus Reed for a 72-yard touchdown on Raceland’s first play from scrimmage and the Rams routed Fleming County 49-14 on Friday night.
Farley was on point for the Rams, going 11 for 14 for 260 yards and throwing five touchdowns to five different receivers.
The first touchdown happened so fast that not even Raceland coach T.J. Maynard saw it.
“I was talking to my defense (following Fleming County’s first series), trying to fix some things there, but obviously to get started like that it gets that momentum on your side and gives the kids a lot of confidence.”
Maynard said having Farley under center really makes his team dangerous because he spreads the ball around.
“With Tyler, he has a great grasp of this offense,” Maynard said. “He’s really become a great leader for our offense, and makes good decisions. We tell him every week get the ball to those guys because we’ve got some playmakers out there.”
Farley, who missed last year’s loss to Fleming because of injury, said it was nice to get some payback against the Panthers.
“It was payback for sure,” Farley said. “I wanted to be out there last year, and I felt we should have won last year. But, oh well. We got them back tonight.”
The Rams scored on their first five possessions, and Farley couldn’t miss. Reed, Daylin Beach, John Valencourt, Scotty Craft and Austin Blankenship all reached the end zone with touchdown receptions from Farley.
Farley said that it got to the point where everyone looked open.
“I was just trying to get everyone the ball tonight,” he said. “Everyone just seemed open.”
While Farley was the catalyst for the offense, the running game added 264 yards on the ground as well.
Senior Ralph Burchett put up 132 yards on just eight carries with a touchdown.
Also helping out on the ground was Michael Litteral who had 34 yards and a touchdown. Litteral’s little brother also got involved, as freshman Zack added 54 yards on six carries.
Maynard said what is dangerous about his team is while worrying about Farley, the ground game can be just as dangerous. But his team needed to get the kinks out.
“We wanted to try and get our running game back on track,” Maynard said. “We know we can throw the football. But for us to be successful we have to run the football.”
While Fleming County couldn’t stop the Rams’ offense, it had trouble getting their offense going as well.
The Panthers managed 359 yards, but could only score on big plays. Quarterback Chris Jones scrambled for a 75-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
The other score came in the second half with a Landon Maxey 56-yard touchdown run.
Without those two big plays, the Panthers were held to small drives that ended in turnovers and punts.
Maynard said his defense, while still needing improvement, stepped up to stop a quick Fleming team.
“I thought our defense played hard tonight,” Maynard said. “Our tackling is getting better and we’re making strides and hopefully we’ll keep getting better defensively.
Maxey finished with 137 yards while Jones finished with 91 yards on the ground and went 3-for-10 with 35 yards and an interception.
