Russell wins
silver bracket
LEXINGTON
Russell’s volleyball team defeated Ashland 25-12, 25-17 to win the top spot in the silver bracket at the Lafayette Invitational last weekend.
Senior Lindsay Wolfe led the way with seven kills and junior Kylie Rice added three. Tessa Peterman paced the team in service points with 15 and also had eight assists. Sydney Watkins added six assists.
On the tournament’s opening day, Russell fell to undefeated Central Hardin in straight sets and then beat previously undefeated Johnson Central in three sets.
The Lady Devils swept three matches on the second day at Kentucky Basketball Academy, downing Madison Central in straight sets and beating Spencer County 2-1 before playing Ashland.

Fairview takes
invitational

Fairview’s girls captured the Class A/AA division in the Geico Classic at Cabell Midland High School on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles finished with 76 points for a 30-point margin over runner-up Philip Barbour among 18 teams.
Eighth-grader Haley Layne led Fairview with an eighth-place time of 21:09. Lyndsey Burke, a seventh-grader, was ninth, Brooklyn Bowen 14th, Maddy Rymer 19th and Audrey Sizemore 27th for Fairview.
Greenup County’s Katie Coldiron took 24th in 22:32 and teammate Olivia Ball was 37th.
Ashland’s boys finished ninth in the AAA division, led by sixth-place Jon Renneker in 16:51. Brennan Kizziar of the Tomcats was 26th overall in 17:53.
