Greenup takes down Rams

‰Linthicum scores game-high 15 against Raceland

Raceland — Sophomore Dustin Linthicum is beginning to show what he can do on the basketball court.

Known for his jumping prowess on Greenup County’s track team, Linthicum appears to have found a home in the Musketeers’ basketball lineup.

Friday night, the 6-foot-5 forward scored a game-high 15 points as Greenup County pulled away from Raceland 58-51.

Linthicum’s soaring putback ignited a 14-4 run in the third quarter to break open a tight contest.

“Dustin is as athletic as anybody this region will see,’’ said Musketeers coach Tim Fraley. “He’s just figuring out what he can do and can’t do.’’

Linthicum’s point total was a season high. The only glitch was a missed dunk in the first half. Linthicum also pulled down five rebounds and blocked two shots.

“It’s the best game I’ve seen him play,’’ said Raceland coach Scott Floyd. “When you have as much length as Greenup County and you are making shots, you are going to be hard to beat.’’

The Musketeers shot 50 percent from the field, including 9-for-13 in the decisive third quarter.

Linthicum and senior guard Jacob Prater each scored seven points to fuel Greenup County’s 20-point quarter.

“This was the most aggressive I’ve seen Dustin offensively since probably his JV time last year,’’ Fraley said. “He came out in the second half looking to score.’’

Fraley was equally pleased with Prater’s contribution. He drove for two baskets and hit a 3-pointer as the Musketeers made their getaway.

“I thought Jacob did a great job getting to the rack,” Fraley said.

The Musketeers’ 37 points in the second half allowed them to reach their magic number. Greenup County (12-9) is 10-1 this season when scoring 51 or more points.

“Early in the year we really had trouble scoring the basketball,” Fraley said. “Since I came back (from a two-week suspension), we’ve been a different ballclub. For whatever reason, they are playing with no pressure on them.”

Greenup County’s size advantage made it difficult for Raceland’s shooters, who connected on only 36 percent from the field.

“They can be a very scary team if they make it to the regional tournament,” Floyd said.

Trey Williams scored 10 points for the Musketeers, who also got nine apiece from Prater and Michael Hampton. Hayden Stephenson, a 6-7 sophomore, added six points off the bench.

Raceland (6-14) stayed on Greenup County’s heels to start the second half by making four consecutive floor shots. But the Musketeers continued to make shots and led 41-30 after three quarters.

Cody Risner led Raceland with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Cody Barker finished with 12 points.

Missed free throws hurt the Rams early. They went 0-for-4 at the foul line in the second quarter.

Prior to the game, Raceland inducted Keri Vanderhoof and Eric Keeton into the school’s Court of Honor.
