RUSSELL —
Russell-Flatwoods 11-12 year-old Little League softball All-Stars, which recently won the state championship, will be fundraising this week before it plays in the Central Regional Tournament in Indianapolis beginning Saturday.
The All-Star team captured last week’s state title in Winchester to earn the right to participate in the national regional. If it wins there, Russell-Flatwoods advances to the Little League Softball World Series in Portland.
Russell-Flatwoods is only the third girls softball team in league history to win a state title. There are 11 girls and three coaches. The team will need hotel rooms for a minimum of six nights.
“Families have had to rearrange vacations,” said parent Carri Jachimczuk, who is helping with team fundraising. “It takes a lot of money to provide rooms and feed the players and coaches.”
The team hopes to gain city approval for a bucket brigade on Wednesday at the cornett of Argillite Road and Powell Street, she said.
They have sent out a letter to area businesses asking for support since Russell-Flatwoods will be representing Kentucky in the tournament. An account has been set up at Citizen’s Bank in Ashland and any donation is tax deductable. Checks should be made out to Russell-Flatwoods Little League.
The league helped the girls’ team with its trip to the state tournament and this week all three of its boys all-star teams will be playing in state tournaments in Prestonsburg.
The regional tournament provides cafeteria food for the teams and laundry services. Russell-Flatwoods is guaranteed four games in pool play on Saturday, Sunday, July 22 and July 24. Pool winners and runners-up advance to the semifinals on July 25.
For more information or to donate, call Jachimczuk at (606) 232-0243, Kendra Holmes at (606) 232-9656 or Rod Hieneman at (606) 922-2571.
