The cafeteria at Ashland Blazer High School is usually covered in the colors of maroon and white. On Thursday night, it was filled with Kentucky blue.
Senior pitcher Logan Salow signed a letter of intent to play baseball as a preferred walk-on for the University of Kentucky.
Putting his name on the dotted line to be a Wildcat has always been a dream for Salow.
“Ever since I’ve been watching college baseball my dream has been to play for Kentucky,” Salow said. “It’s my favorite school and I love the Blue and White. Absolutely it was my dream.”
And what made this dream even better was that the cafeteria was filled with coaches, family and friends all dressed in Kentucky blue, or Ashland maroon.
“It was just awesome,” Salow said. “In front of all my friends and family is what really did it for me. My brothers are here, my mom, my dad, my grandma, my grandpa and my cousins, it’s just truly a blessing to have everybody here on my side rooting for me.”
Salow was voted The Independent’s All-Area Player of The Year after compiling 120 strikeouts and just 31 walks his junior year.
He also helped lead Ashland to its first 16th Region title since 2004.
Ashland coach Jeff Wilcox said not only has it been an honor to coach Salow, but it was a joy to be able to watch him sign on Thursday.
“He deserves it,” Wilcox said. “With his hard work and his ethic, the way he goes about, he’ll be a great player for Kentucky.”
A preferred walk-on spot doesn’t involve any athletic scholarship money, but it does guarantee him a spot on the team for his freshman year.
Before the Wildcats came calling, Salow was considering a scholarship offer from Eastern Kentucky.
“I was recruited hard by EKU,” Salow said. “I was leaning more toward them than I was UK. It was to a point where I was committed to EKU and I wanted to go there. Then UK showed interest.
“I had money at EKU, but going up to (Lexington) and finding out the coaches really wanted me there, it was the deciding factor.”
Salow will have a chance to earn a full scholarship, and his former coach knows it’s only a matter of time before he does.
“Once he gets down there and learns the ropes and concentrates fully on baseball, his talent will take him far,” Wilcox said.
The left-hander, though, has some big shoes to fill. The last Tomcat to pitch for Kentucky was Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb.
Salow is ready to work to live up to the expectations.
“It starts here,” he said. “I still have a ways to go before I go up there and pitch. I want to go up there and show myself up there.
“That’s what I’m looking forward to — being the underdog, really, and go up and show that I’m worthy of being up there.”
