ASHLAND —
Second quarter
75-CATS couldn’t get a first down and were forced to punt. Sang boomed a 38-yard kick that Mitchell Koontz returned seven yards to the 41.
90-CATS went back to work but found nothing but a stone wall defense in front of them. Charlie Johnson gained a yard and Juan Thomas was stuffed for no gain after meeting All-Stater Terry Bell on an off-tackle play in one of the biggest hits of the game. Brown went back to pass but Yancey Ramey came in for the six-yard sack.
Thomas unleashed a 37-yard punt to the 40. Sang took the kick and started left, then flipped to Gary Thomas on the reserve. He went 60 yards untouched for the touchdown. Kevin Ward’s extra point was blocked but 75-CATS had pulled within 14-6 with 9:09 left in the half.
The 90-CATS started on the 18 after the kickoff and began methodically moving it again. Then Juan Thomas, breaking tackles, got loose for a 47-yard run before Gary Thomas dragged him down from behind at the 25.
The 90-CATS kept pounding away with runs, moving to a first-and-goal at the 10. However, three plays netted only seven yards so the field goal unit came into the game. Hill, a soccer star, booted the 20-yard kick that just made it through the right upright for a 17-6 advantage with 3:53 left in the half.
A short kickoff and a 17-yard return by Sang brought it out to the 33. Anderson zipped a 20-yard pass to Sang for a first down and Gary Thomas made the edge and sped to a another 20-yard gain to the 90-CATS 25.
After a timeout, Jeff Slone picked up 16 yards to the nine. Shippey was stopped for no gain up the middle but Slone gained four yards to the five. Shippey then did the rest, this time following blocks by Terry Lewis and Bell and bulling his way into the end zone with 1:08 remaining in the first half.
Anderson’s attempted pass to Sang sailed out of the end zone on the two-point conversion try and the 75-CATS trailed only 17-12.
90-CATS 17, 75-CATS 12
