Pike Central roughs up Boyd County

CANNONSBURG — Statistics never lie and they sure painted an ugly picture for Boyd County Friday night.

Pike County Central completely dominated the Lions, rolling up 524 yards overall — and a staggering 401-5 advantage in the first half — en route to a 50-0 victory at Tom Scott Field.

“When they can throw it over top of you and gash you with the run, you are in big trouble,” said shellshocked Boyd County coach Lee Evans.

The trouble started early for the Lions (0-3) when Hawks quarterback Alan Boggs connected with Wes Pugh for a 62-yard touchdown pass just four and a half minutes into the game

The duo of Boggs and Pugh would hook up again later in the first quarter, this time for a 3-yard touchdown strike. In all, Pugh caught five passes for 153 yards.

“We gave up those (pass plays) and it is a deflator, and we did not rebound,” said Evans.

In the second quarter, when the Lions were protecting against the pass, the Hawks cranked up the running game.

Boggs rushed for three scores in the second quarter, going in from one, 8, and 10 yards.

Boggs was not the only Hawk to be productive on the ground. Junior Justin Smith racked up 125 yards on 16 carries, including a score in the third quarter. That was after the Hawks had built a 42-0 halftime lead.

“The key to a good offense is that you have to be balanced,” said Pike Central coach John Chapman. “Even if you want to throw the football, you have to have a running attack.”

While the Hawks were good on the ground, thier forte is the passing game.

Boggs was outstanding, going 17 of 21 for 321 yards and three scores before being removed early in the third quarter.

“We love that pass,” Chapman said. “We are going to make you defend the whole field. We are going to try and stretch both horizontally and vertically.

As for the Lions, they were never able to establish any type of rhythm running or throwing, as the managed just four first downs for the entire game.

Boyd County rushed 16 times but went backwards more times than gaining positive yards. They completed 6 of 15 passes for 60 yards.

“We couldn’t move the ball running it and we couldn’t move the ball throwing it,” Evans said. “We dinked and dunked there at the end, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Winless Boyd County will host undefeated Fairview next Friday night.
