ASHLAND —
Marene Hinton Crafton Booth, 95, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, in Ashland, after a long illness.
She was born Dec. 16, 1916, to Melvin and Roma Lena Hinton in Logan County. At age five, Marene’s mother passed away. She and her infant sister, Virginia, were raised by their grandparents on their Logan County farm. On Feb. 27, 1933, Marene married Leo Crafton. They had three daughters and one son.
After moving to Michigan, she worked as a professional dressmaker and became manager of the alterations department of an exclusive dress shop, Alvins’ of Pontiac.
Marene was known for her kindness, love of animals and willingness to help those in need. She began every day by reading her Bible. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and playing the harmonica, something she was taught by her uncle at age nine.
She married Wayne Booth in 1956. They were nature enthusiasts and enjoyed to travel.
Marene loved to share stories of growing up on the farm with her grandparents, aunts, uncles and her sister, Virginia. She was especially close to her youngest aunt, Margaret Hinton Wagoner. The dearest thing in Marene’s life was her children. She was a very loving mother and her children cherish wonderful memories of her. The Christian values she taught have endured as a tribute to her. She was the oldest member of Unity Baptist Church in Ashland.
She was a widow and was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Wellborn; brothers, M. C. Hinton and Robert Hinton of Bowling Green; and a grandson, Bradley Crunk.
Survivors include her four children, LaReta Roe of Ashland, Jean Crunk, of Evansville, Ind., Roma Hickman, of New Albany, Miss., and Leon Crafton of Keego Harbor, Mich.; grandchildren, Joshua Allen of Hampton, Va., Justin Goodman of Memphis, Tenn., Barry Goodman of Waterford, Miss., Robert Johnson of Tupelo, Miss., Melvin Crafton of Dallas, Texas, Stephen Crafton of Naples, Fla., William Crafton of Portsmouth, Va., Lisa Crafton of Keego Harbor, Mich., and Angela Miller of Evansville, Ind.; nieces, Carla Bond and Kathy Bowden; nephews, Marty Hinton, Roger Hinton, Kenneth Hinton and Ronnie Hinton. Marene Hinton Crafton Booth leaves 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a world better than she found it.
The funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home in Bowling Green with burial in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
