Joseph Walter Messer 1945-2012

GREENUP — Joe Messer, formerly of Flatwoods, died Aug. 7, 2012.

He was a 1964 graduate of Wurtland High School. He was born Dec. 2, 1945, at home in Greenup County to the late Mabel Irene Adkins Messer and the late Oscar Messer.

Also preceding him in death were his stepmother, Hazel Adkins Messer of Ky. 2 in Greenup; his grandparents, Joe and Etta Corns Adkins of Leatherwood and Charlie and Tennie Lore Messer of Ramey Branch, Grayson. Joe retired after 31 years with CSX as a laborer and served as safety adviser for years at the Shop Track in Raceland. Joe was also a Kentucky colonel and past vice president of the Greenup Jaycees and Flatwoods Volunteer Fire Department. Joe was a Christian and fought hard with the battle against lung cancer.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Doug and Pam Messer of Raceland, and a daughter and her husband, Aleshia Jo Messer Griffith and Mark Griffith of Sabina, Ohio. He had five grandchildren, Mannon Joy Davis and William Zamus Connor Messer of Raceland and Amie, Zack and Arwen Breanna Griffith of Sabina; a brother, Billy Edward and Vickie Messer of Boyd County; two sisters, Annette Madden (the late Frank Madden) of Lloyd and Georgia (Howard) Blanton of Greenup; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his wife of 38 years, Anna Rae Hamilton Messer of Flatwoods; a nephew and his wife, Billy Ray and Lee Ann Price, and their children, Quanna Jade and Jaden Hawk Price of Flatwoods; and his pastor and best friend, Marvin Frazier of Davenport, Fla.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Sept. 15 at Ironton First Church of the Nazarene in Ironton, Ohio, at the corner of South Fourth and Pleasant streets, from noon until all hearts are satisfied. Music will be provided by EXIT 161 and friends and family members in celebration of one of the Tri-State’s BEST upright bluegrass gospel doghouse bass players. Joe had played with more than 12 bluegrass bands, but his most interesting music memory was playing bass on the live recording of the “Old and in the Way” bluegrass album with the Grateful Dead.

Food and pop will be welcomed at the dinner following the service at the church.
