Daniel Carey III (1981-2010)
Daniel Carey III, 28, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born Nov. 10, 1981, in Ironton, Ohio. He was a 2000 graduate of Russell High School.
Surviving are his mother, Vicki Wurts of Franklin Furnace, Ohio; his father, Daniel Carey II of Russell, Ky.; a brother, David Wurts of Russell; a stepbrother, Tyler Baldridge of Russell; two stepsisters, Christina Baldridge of Russell and Amanda Wurts of Wheelersburg, Ohio; his maternal grandmother, Mary Blankenship of Ironton, Ohio; maternal grandfather and his wife, Jim and Marcella Hughes of Coal Grove, Ohio; paternal grandparents, Dan and Sue Carey of Coal Grove; two children, Noah Carey and Layla Carey, both of Ashland; loving companion, Jessie Zacur of Ashland; an aunt, Crystal Heckel of New London, Ohio; and two uncles, Randy Fields of Ashland and Jimmy Hughes of Ironton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton with the Rev. Steve Harvey officiating. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

Fred W. Nall (1919-2010)
Fred W. Nall died Thursday in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility following a sudden illness. He was born June 21, 1919, in Island, Ky., to the late Ocie B. and Grover Cleveland Nall.
He was a World War II veteran, attended The Army School of Criminal Investigation, studied Civil Engineering through the International Correspondence School and graduated from the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisal at North Carolina State University. He served with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Army Criminal Investigation Division in Great Britain, France, Belgium and Germany.
He joined Ashland Oil Inc. in 1941 at the Owensboro, Ky., pipeline division, transferred to Ashland in 1957 and served in a variety of supervisory and management positions. He joined the coal division at Ashland Oil as Land Development Manager and was named Vice President of Ashland Coal in 1981.
Upon retirement in 1985, Fred’s focus became the establishment of quality long term health care in the Ashland area community. His dedication to this vision was realized through the development of Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland, Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky., Middlesboro Health Care Facility in Middlesboro, Ky. and Martin County Health Care Facility in Inez, Ky.
He devoted much of his time and energy to his church and community. He was a past member of the Ashland Board of Education and the Advisory Board for Vocational Education in Kentucky Region 10. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Lexington Kentucky Theological Seminary. He was serving on the Board of Trustees for National City Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Foundation in Washington, D.C. and the University of Kentucky’s Sanders Brown Center on Aging. Mr. Nall joined the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ashland in 1957 and has served as Deacon, Elder and Chairman of the Board. He also served as a member of the General Minister and President (Budget and Finance) Committee of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a member of the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada (1975-1978); 1st vice Moderator, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ky. (1978-1980); and Moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ky. (1980-1982).
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Evelyn Nall; daughters, Darlene Young Nall of Nashville, Tenn., Sandra Nall Coburn of Orlando, Fla. and Patti Nall Sanford of Ashland; granddaughters, Torri Leigh Sanford of Wilmington, N.C., and Lynsey Elizabeth Coburn of Orlando, Fla. He is also survived by his beloved pet Natasha.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, with the Rev. B. Dinsmore Nisbet and the Rev. Larry Sivis officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from noon to the service time Tuesday.

Mary Patricia Dail (1930-2010)
Mary Patricia Dail, of Ashland, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. She was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Butler County, Pa., to the late Harry Carl and Julia M. Webb Wonderling. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Howard.
She is survived by her husband, Walter S. Dail; two sons, William J. “Bill” Dail and wife Patti of Ashland and Walter W. Dail and wife Cindy of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Doris Mulneix of Pa.; a brother, William Wonderling of Pa.; 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Private burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Norma Jean Fullerton Weidenheller (1933-2010)
Norma Jean Fullerton Weidenheller, 76, has joined the heavenly choir, playing piano and singing the praises of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as of Jan. 29, 2010. She was born April 11, 1933, the second daughter of the late Jessie Louise Harris Fullerton and Claude “Bud” Dextel Fullerton. She attended Ashland Schools, was involved in many school activities, and graduated from Ashland High in 1951. She worked for Columbia Gas before marrying her husband of 54 years, John T. Weidenheller. She later joined him in the family business, the Hatcher Produce and Feed.
Norma learned to play the piano at an early age and used her musical gifts in service to Liberty Missionary Baptist Church where she was the church’s pianist for close to 40 years. When they sold the farm, they moved into town and became members of Unity Baptist, where she continued to be active in the choir and dramas. She also used her musical gifts to teach others. She was a piano teacher to many students through the years, earning her Kentucky Music Teachers Association certification at Kentucky Christian College. She was a past president of AAKMTA and performed in KMTA teacher ensembles. Her students performed in the KMTA state competitions. She followed her students closely through the years, playing at several of their weddings.
Norma loved to travel and one of the highlights would have been her trip to Israel. She and John took several trips out West visiting the National Parks.
She was preceded in death by her in-laws, John and Christine Weidenheller; and brother-in-law, Tom Weidenheller.
She is survived by her husband, John; a sister, Mary Jo Baum of Deltona, Pa., a brother, John D. Fullerton; a sister, Nancy Edmond (Gary) of Ashland; two nieces, Gail Baum Bennett (Leland) of San Jose, Calif., and Cathy Edmond Hanson (Joe) of Raceland; three nephews, David Baum (Diane) of Lakewood, Calif., Richard Edmond (Kelley) of Oceanside, Calif., and David Edmond (Mindy) of Ashland; and 9 great nieces and nephews, Sarah, Emily and Mussie Hanson, Katelyn Bennett, Hunter and Haley Edmond, Ryan, Jesse and Megan Edmond. Norma loved children and they all loved her. Her nieces and nephews have fond memories of time spent with John and her.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, with Dr. Floyd Paris. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, and at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.

Curtis Alden “Bud” Smith Jr.
Curtis Alden “Bud” Smith Jr., 66, of Greenup, Ky., formerly of South Shore, Ky., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, in South West General Health Center in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. He was born in South Shore to the late Curtis A. Smith Sr. and Evelyn French Smith. He was a retired brakeman for CSX Railroad, a member of Fellowship Baptist Church of South Shore and a member and coordinator of the Greenup Baptist Disaster Relief Association.
Surviving are his ex-wife, Joyce Bentley of South Shore; three daughters, Kelly Coldiron and Tina Veach, both of Greenup, and Lena Mitchell of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Curt B. Smith of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, James H. Smith of South Shore; a sister, Virginia Stafford of Fla.; and 9 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Kibbey.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Fellowship Baptist Church in South Shore with the Rev. Robert Copley officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in South Shore.

Edith Rhoden Medley (1923-2010)
Edith Rhoden Medley, 86, of Greenup, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at her home. She was born June 21, 1923, in Wurtland, Ky., to the late Fred and Dollie Johnson Grubb. She was a member of Chinns Branch Baptist Church in Wurtland, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Medley; a daughter, Linda Rhoden; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Renee Rhoden.
She is survived by nine sons, Clyde Rhoden of Greenup, Kenneth Rhoden of Greenup, Bill Rhoden of Greenup, Mike Rhoden of Greenup, Fred Rhoden of Raceland, Jay Rhoden of Greenup, Wayne Rhoden of Columbus, Ohio, Jeff Rhoden of Greenup and David Medley of Wurtland; two daughters, Kathy Horsley of Wurtland and Regina Deaton of Greenup; two sisters, Lucille Hicks and Dorothy Zornes, both of Raceland; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Chinns Branch Baptist Church in Wurtland by Pastor Denver Woods and Ernie Melvin. Burial will be in McEldowney Cemetery in Vanceburg, Ky.

Richard Glen Barker (1927-2010)
Richard Glen Barker, 82, of Oldtown, Ky., went to be with his heavenly Father Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson, Ky. He was born April 30, 1927, in Boyd County, Ky., to the late Charles D. and Minnie Penix Barker. He was a retired Carman from C & O Railroad and was an avid farmer. He was a United States Army WWII veteran and gave his life to the Lord Sept. 7, 2001.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Richard Barker; and three brothers, James Paul Barker, Delmar Barker and William Clifford Barker.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou Brown Barker; 5 sons, Larry (Bonita) Barker of Russell, Ky., Ronald Barker of Oldtown, Darrell (Cathy Gayle) Barker of Oldtown, Jeff Barker of Owensboro, Ky. and Greg (Sherry) Barker of Oldtown; a daughter, Pam (Delmar) Reffett of Oldtown; two brothers, Ray Barker of Danelyton, Ky. and Carl Barker of Flatwoods, Ky.; three sisters, Allene Miller of Flatwoods, Janice Tackett of Flatwoods and June Hall of South Shore, Ky.; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Terry Bryant. Burial will be in Warnock Cemetery.

Betty Jo Adkins Tuttle (1930-2008)
Betty Jo Adkins Tuttle, 78, passed away at her son’s home in Bountiful, Utah, surrounded by family and loved ones on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, after a four-month battle with brain cancer.
Betty was born on Feb. 24, 1930, in Raceland, Ky., to William Edward and Pearl Brown Adkins.
She attended Raceland Independent Schools graduating as class valedictorian in 1948. In 1952, she graduated from Western Kentucky State College as a home economics teacher. In 1971, while raising four children, she received her master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati.
She was united in marriage to William A. Tuttle on Aug. 2, 1952, in Raceland. Later the marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She taught school in Raceland, Cincinnati, Ohio, Salt Lake City, Utah and Rangely, Colo. One of her greatest joys was teaching her granddaughters and other dear friends how to sew and cook and delighted in sharing her recipes with others. She was happiest when sharing her talents and skills.
She has touched many lives by kindly and patiently leading those who wanted to improve their homemaking abilities. Everyone who knew Betty loved her. She was knowledgeable in many areas and always helped people in their particular need.
After retiring from teaching she and her husband had the privilege of serving a mission in Scotland and London, England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She was active in her church serving as Relief Society president, Young Women’s president, primary teacher and prior to her illness, an ordinance worker in the Vernal Temple.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; two sons, Roger Tuttle of Bountiful and Jim Tuttle of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Christie Tuttle of San Diego and Donna Gohr of Rangely; a brother, Gene Adkins of Ashland, Ky.; and six grandchildren and their spouses.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her sister, Helen Adkins Justice and brothers, Harold, Morris “Possum” and Larry. She was also preceded in death by her toddler son, William Christopher.
Memorial services were held at the LDS Church in Rangely at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009.
Betty’s final resting place will be in the family plot in the Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ky.
She was loved by all especially her grandchildren and will be greatly missed.
Lydia Pruitt Miller (1911-2010)
Lydia Pruitt Miller, 99, of Greenup, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky. She was born Jan. 29, 1911, in Clay Lick, Ky. to the late Charles and Liza Jane McClaskey Pruitt. Her hsuband, John Morgan Miller, preceded her in death Jan. 16, 1996. She was a founding member of Raccoon Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, John Michael Miller and wife Carma Deane of Greenup; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Thurman Edward Miller and Harold Eugene Miller; a daughter, Juanita Darlene Chandley; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup by Borthers Danny Brown and Bill Oaks. Burial will be in McGuire Cemetery in Greenup.

Marcus Anthoney “Big Red” McCleese, 39, of Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 28, 2010, in Paducah, Ky., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born July 27, 1970, in Rowan County, Ky., to Marcus McCleese and Valerie Brown. He was an employee of Welder Pipeliner Local 798. He attended the First Church of God in Morehead, Ky.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Joseph Carlton “Big John” McCleese.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 17 years, Carla Lawson McCleese; a daughter, Autumn Nicole McCleese of Olive Hill; a brother and sister-in-law, Travis Neil and Patricia McCleese of Olive Hill; his maternal grandmother, Esta McCleese of Olive Hill; two nephews, Brody Slade McCleese and Trevor Wayne Lawson; and several other extended family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Olive Hill Historical Society Building in Olive Hill with Brother Tim Wagoner officiating. Burial will be in Pitts Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Daniel Irvin Thomas Sr. (1928-2010)
Daniel Irvin Thomas Sr., 82, of Versailles, Ky., formerly of Paintsville, Ky. and Pikeville, Ky., died Thursday, Jan. 28, in Naples, Fla. He was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Louisville, Ky. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, graduated from Lockyear Business School in Evansville, Ind., and retired from Whayne Supply Co. after 47 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Jerome and Thelma O’Bryan Thomas; and a son-in-law, Gene Borland.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Kercher Thomas of Naples, Fla. and Versailles; three sons, Jim (Kim) Thomas of Paintsville, Dan Thomas Jr. of Midway, Ky., and Robert Thomas of Louisville; six daughters, Nancy (Terry) Walker of Vidalia, Ga., Susan Borland of Midway, Mary (Vince) Bienek of Keller, Texas, Cathy (Paul David) Brown of Paintsville, Peggy Draughn of Louisville and Jeanne (Scott) Kreutzer of Pikeville; three brothers, Jerry (Rosalie) Thomas of Louisville, J.O. “Connie” (Janet) Thomas of Uniontown, Ky., and Kenneth Thomas of Murray, Ky.; two sisters, Celestine Akers of Erlanger, Ky., and Minerva (Richard) Sarver of Lake Wylie, S.C.; and 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo Catholic Church, 295 Huntertown Road, Versailles, Ky. Burial will be in St. Anne Cemetery in Morganfield, Ky.

Jo Ann Boggs Salyers (1952-2010)
Jo Ann Boggs Salyers, 57, of Sandy Hook, Ky., went home to be with the Lord Friday morning, Jan. 29, 2010, at her residence. She was born April 25, 1952, in Lawrence County, Ky. to the late Ruben J. and Edith Ellen Butler Boggs. She was a Christian and a member of the Freedom Tabernacle at Webbville and a former employee of Elliott County Board of Education.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, John Boggs, Stanley Boggs and James Valentine Boggs; two sisters, Jean Browning and Phyllis Salyers.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Clyde Paul Salyers of Sandy Hook; two sons, Hayden Salyers of Sandy Hook and Joshua Salyers of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Gary Douglas Boggs and wife Bonnie of Flemingsburg, Ky.; and two sisters, Jessie Robinette and Wilma Pennington and husband Raymond, all of Webbville, Ky. She will be missed by a host of special nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and a special childhood friend, Ottie Mae Carter of Louisa, Ky.

Alvin Bayes, 70, of Flat Gap, died Thursday at his residence. He was born April 30, 1939, in Johnson County. His wife, Della Jean Grimm Bayes, survives.

Lorrie Middleton Watson, 74, of Wheelersburg, died Friday in Southern Ohio Medical Center. She was born Sept. 30, 1935, in Lawrence County, Ohio. Her husband, Kenneth Watson, survives.
