Benjamin Harrison Young (1941-2009)

Benjamin Harrison Young, 68, of Ashland, Ky., died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 19, 1941, in Ashland, the son of the late Hurley A. and Lesta Sloas Young.

He was retired from Columbia Gas Co.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Curtis Young, Larry Young and Roy Roger Young.

Survivors include his wife, Linda R. Young; three daughters, Theresa (Robert) Haney of Wurtland, Ky., Susan (Thomas) Cline of Savannah, Ga., and Kathleen (Jon) Adams of Ashland; four sisters, Patricia Crum of Chesapeake, Ohio, and Flora Willett, Linda Sue Erwin and Karen Mullins, all of Ashland; and five grandchildren, Thomas Gamble Jr., Joshua Gamble, Thomas Cline Jr., Nicholas Cline and Harrison K. Adams.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Rose Hill Mausoleum. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Carl Dove (1935–2009)

Carl Samuel Dove, 73, of Ashland, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, after his passing from the King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mr. Dove was born Nov. 24, 1935, in Ashland, a son of the late Dock and Mabel Anderson Dove. His loving wife, Ina “Margo” Dove preceded him in death Aug. 17, 2009. He was retired from the Calgon Corp. maintenance department, coached Ashland American Little League for 21 years, was an avid UK Wildcat and Tomcat fan and a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are four children, Eddie (Debbie) Dove, Sandy (Steve) Collier and Jennifer Kirk, all of Ashland, and Chris Dove of Lexington, Ky; three sisters, Lucille Staggs and Harriett (Bill) Sarven, both of Ashland, and Dorothy McCarty of Scarbro, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Dr. Audrey (Curran) Scarlata, Natasha Kirk, Justin Robinson, Dixie Robinson, Cody Ritchie, Allie Bester, Alyson Salyers and Christopher Dove; and six great-grandchildren, Lacy Robinson, Trent Robinson, Nicholas Scarlata, Brandon Scarlata, Mariah Kirk and Xavier Taylor.

Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Charles Dove, Dock Dove Jr., Allen G. Dove and John D. Dove; and two sisters, Betty Jo Castle and Elizabeth Maynard.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. A message of comfort will be offered by Pastor Mike Blankenship. Committal will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home



Tina Price (1927–2009)

Tina Yates Price, 82, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland, Ky.

Mrs. Price was born May 18, 1927, in Pikeville, Ky., a daughter of the late Oscar Yates and Mary Magdalene Harris Penix. Her husband, Clair J. Price, preceded her in 1993. She was a faithful volunteer with King’s Daughters Medical Center, a trustee for the Ashland Eagles and enjoyed singing and dancing.

Sadly left behind is a loving family, including a daughter, Barbara Laning of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, David Alan (Deborah) Price of Rockford, Ill.; a brother, James (Mary) Yates of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Clara Blevins of Beckley, W.Va., Faye Childers of Columbia, Tenn., and Helen (David) Henry of LeSage, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Eric Price, Anita Price, Timothy Beechner, Gregory Beechner and Mark Laning Jr; and five great-grandchildren, Cassandra Beechner, Autumn Beechner, David Beechner, Anthony Campbell and Hailey Beechner.

Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Raymond Yates, Lee Yates, Ernest Yates and Russell Yates; two sisters, Marie Vinson and Mary Scott; and a grandson, Lester Beechner.

A funeral service for Mrs. Price will be at noon Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. A message of comfort will be offered by Brother Phil Richardson. Final rest will follow a committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland, Ky.

Faye McKnight (1911–2009)

Faye L. Flannery McKnight, 97, of Rush, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 8, 2009, at the home of her daughter.

Faye was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Oldtown, Ky., the oldest of eight children to the late Luther E. and Olive Howerton Flannery.

She previously worked as a supervisor with Rosenau Brothers and was a member of Hoods Creek Regular Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Faye was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett H. McKnight; a son, Charles Edward McKnight; an infant daughter, Mabel Lucille McKnight; two brothers, Leonard W. Flannery and John W. Flannery; four sisters, Hazel Webb, Nola Smith, Lorraine Parsons and Eloise Steely; a grandson, Bruce Wayne Leibee; and a great-grandson, Nathan Wayne Leibee.

She is survived by a devoted daughter and son-in-law, Hazel Marie and Robert Leibee of Rush, Ky.; a daughter-in-law, Sue McKnight of Ashland; a sister, Elizabeth Davis Jenkins of Dayton, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Virgie Flannery of Rush; a brother-in-law, Thomas (Ellen) McKnight of Ashland; six grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Pastor Russell Griffith. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.



Rita Sparks Quesenberry (1941-2009)

Rita Gay Sparks Quesenberry, 68, of Flatwoods, Ky., husband of Navie Quesenberry, died at her residence Monday morning following a short illness.

Rita was born Jan. 7, 1941, in McDowell County, W.Va., a daughter of Della Ross Sparks of Oceana, W.Va., and the late Ray Sparks.

Rita was a member of Flatwoods City Council and Grace Baptist Church and was a beautician.

She was also preceded in death, in addition to her father, by her brother, Austin Sparks, in 1977.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Scott Quesenberry and wife Melody of Eagle River, Alaska; a daughter, Shannon Hobbs and husband Jeff of Columbus, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jason and Kellyn Hobbs and Austin and William Quesenberry; and two sisters, Audrey “Rabbit” Samples of Oceana and Francis “Snooky” Roney of Laurel, Miss.

A memorial service will be at 8 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church by the Rev. Marvin Boggs and Rev. Bill Dillon.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. at the church.

Ralph Lyons (1951-2009)

Ralph Lyons, 58, of Lowmansville, Ky., went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, following a long illness.

Ralph was born Jan. 26, 1951, in Johnson County, Ky., the son of the late homer and Edna Borders Lyons.

He was a coal miner and sawmill operator.

Survivors include his loving wife, Kay Slone Lyons; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Randy Keeton of Louisa, Ky., and Jennifer and James Maynard of River, Ky.; a son and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Michelle Lyons of Charley, Ky.; five sisters, Alice Jean Rice of Louisa, Sue Keener of Westerville, Ohio, Janet Lyons of Ashland, Ky., Kay Lyons of Charley, Ky., and Debbie Johnson of Flatgap; two brothers, Homer Lee Lyons and Roger Lyons, both of Lowmansville, Ky.; and six grandchildren, Andrew Lyons, Korey Maynard, Laura Keeton, Anna Keeton, Madison Maynard and Emma Keeton.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Lowmansville by Rev. Jimmy Vanhoose, the Rev. Willie Gene Hayes and the Rev. Ric Frazier. Burial will be in Lyons Cemetery in Lowmansville.

Herald Leonydus Smith Jr. (1930-2009)

Herald Leonydus Smith Jr., 79, of Ironton, Ohio, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Constance Joann Fossett Smith.

He was born June 15, 1930, in Smithfield, Ohio. He was the son of the late Herald L. Smith (Dorothy) and Bertha Harris Smith.

He retired from Armco Steel after 32 years of service and was employed at Ohio University Southern. He was a worshipful master of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge 42, board president of the Community Action Organization for 32 years, a Lawrence County minority representative of the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission, president of Ironton Little League, president of the NAACP and faithful member of Quinn Chapel AME Church, where he served as president of the trustee board and was a Sunday school teacher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Henry Smith and Verl L. Smith; a sister, Rosalie Jackson; and granddaughters Donita Joann Sanders and Treysha Nicole Thomas.

He is survived by his wife, Constance and children, Herald Leonydus Smith III (Neci) of Loveland, Ohio, Marva Louise DuVall of Cincinnati, Ohio, Robert Franklin Smith (Debra) of Ashland, Ky., Jacalyn Joann McAfee of Ironton, Ohio, Bertha Juanita Thomas of Mount Orab, Ohio, Bridget Charlene Johnson (Aaron) of Ironton and Michael Kevin Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; and a brother, Marion David Smith (Rowena) of Phoenix, Ariz. Herald is survived by 15 grandchildren, Charlotte Smith, Herald Smith IV, Damon Sanders, Justin Canty, Lauren Canty, Morgan Canty, Alfreda McAfee, Constance McAfee, Dominic Thomas, Matthew (Erica) Johnson, James (Tiffany) Johnson, Herald Johnson, Andy Smith, Madison Smith and Jordan Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at noon Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Quinn Chapel AME Church.

Donna Gail Fannin, 57, of Frenchburg, died Sunday in Morehead.

Her husband, Seldon Fannin, survives.

Lucille Dole-Vaughan, 87, of Russell, died Sept. 3.

She was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Ironton.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Samuel Dole and Raymond Marshall Vaughan.

A graveside service will be at 1:45 p.m. Friday at Woodland Cemetery.
