Dolores VanHoose (1931-2009)

Dolores E. VanHoose, 77, of Ashland died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was born Nov. 2, 1931, in Ashland, Ky., the daughter of the late Leonard and Nora Daniel DeHart. She was a homemaker and an artist with a studio at the Pendleton Art Gallery where she was selected artist of the month in 2008. She was of the Christian Science faith and a member of various art clubs in the area.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband William J. VanHoose and a grandson Ricky Vaughn. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Vaughn and her husband Butch of Ashland, Ky., and Paula Kay Fraley of South Point, Ohio; a son William David “Bill” VanHoose of Ashland, Ky.; a sister Mildred Hoffman of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Bill DeHart of Tucson, Ariz. and Paul DeHart of Port Charlotte, Fla.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. on Tuesday Sept. 15, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will follow at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.



Ronald “Keith” Gammon (1953-2009)

Ronald “Keith” Gammon of Ashland, Ky., formerly of South Shore, Ky., age 56, died Friday at King’s Daughters Medical Center at 1:35 p.m. He was born April 6, 1953, in Portsmouth, Ohio.

He was a retired maintenance mechanic for Dayton Walther and Norfolk & Southern Railroad. He was also the past president of the Greenup County Wildlife Club, and an avid bass fisherman, fishing in many tournaments.

He is preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Gammon. Surviving are mother and stepfather, Jim and Margaret Wagner Cooper of South Shore, Ky.; son Jason and wife Lisa Gammon of Morehead; daughter Jamie Gammon of Portsmouth, Ohio; stepchildren Wes and Fay Blevins of Lexington, Ky.; and grandchildren Kyle, Taylor and Kasey. Also surviving are four brothers, Dale and Sharon Gammon of South Shore, Herb and Linda Gammon or South Shore, Brian and Lisa Gammon of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, Craig and Brenda Gammon of South Shore; and three sisters, Beth and Harold Breech of West Portsmouth, Ohio, Brenda Porter of South Portsmouth, Ky., Dianne Gammon of South Shore; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

There will be a traditional funeral Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore, Ky. with Fay Blevins and Gordon Boggs officiating. Interment will be at the Ashland Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dale Gammon, Herb Gammon, Brian Gammon, Craig Gammon, George Burney, Cecil Justice and Lawrence Blankenship. Jim Cooper will be an Honorary Pallbearer.

Ralph Moore (1939-2009)

Ralph Moore, 70, of Cannonsburg Road, Catlettsburg, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mr. Moore was a son of Isaac and Georgia Stewart Moore, born June 9, 1939, in Lawrence County, Ky. He is preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, Forest, Lindsey, Paul, Richard, Arthur, Fred, Isaac Jr., and one sister, Victoria.

Ralph retired from Armco Steel Hot Strip Electrical Power Department after 36 years. He was a preacher who was dedicated to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Ralph was a deacon and faithful member of Mavity Freewill Baptist Church.

Sadly left behind is a loving family including his wife of 50 years, Susie Nell Hicks Moore; daughter, Patty Moore, Catlettsburg; two sons, Tim Moore, his wife Jan, Catlettsburg, Larry Moore, his wife Betsy, Ashland; and five granddaughters who were the light of his life, Jennifer, Amanda, Elizabeth, Chrissy and Lara Kate. Also surviving is a brother, James Moore, Mt. Sterling, Ky., two sisters, Ruby Moore Terry, Phoenix, Ariz., Ella Moore Sexton, Catlettsburg.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. A message of hope and inspiration will be offered by Pastor Mike Gullett. Final rest to follow a committal at Klaiber Cemetery in Rush, Ky.

Leonard May (1937-2009)

Leonard Elwood May, Sr., 72, was born April 21, 1937, and raised in Catlettsburg, Ky. He was a graduate of Boyd County High School, Ashland, Ky. Class of ‘55. He passed at home with family and friends on Sept. 10, 2009, in Spotsylvania, Va.

He is a retired Staff Sgt., of 20 years, in the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War and was assigned in Italy, Germany and South Korea.

Gardening was a favorite past time. He was an avid fisherman and a fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He was a friend to anyone he met.

Surviving him are siblings Paul May and Ruby Runyon. His children are Mr. and Mrs. Leonard E. May, Jr., Tina M. May, and Mr. and Mrs. James A. May and grandchildren Matthew, Steven, Ashley, Quinnton, Rheece, and Rheanna. He is also survived by nephews, nieces and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407. A celebration of life ceremony will follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Bob Schultz officiating. He will be laid to rest at Golden Oaks Cemetery in Ashland, Ky. on April 21, 2010, joining his parents and other family members.

Kathy Perkins (1956-2009)

Kathy Burkhardt Perkins of Flatwoods, Ky., age 53, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Oakmont Manor following an extended illness. She was born in Ashland, Ky. on March 28, 1956. She was a homemaker and had attended Wurtland Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by mother Phyllis Joyce Fannin Burkhardt, and brother Gary Burkhardt.

Surviving are one daughter, Danita Reed of Sullivan, Ind.; father Roscoe V. Burkhardt of Flatwoods, Ky.; two brothers, William Keith Burkhardt of Wurtland, Ky. and Michael Vernon Burkhardt of Muddy Branch, Ky.

There will be a private service. Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods is in charge of arrangements.



Dewey Geear (1926-2009)

Dewey Geear, 82, loving father and dedicated educator, of Ironton, Ohio passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at his residence.

Dewey was born Dec. 23, 1926, and raised in Morgan County, West Liberty, Ky. Son of the late Noah P. Greear and Pearl Perry Greear of West Liberty, Ky. He was proceeded in death by his wife Linnie Roland Greear; his sisters, Eva Lee Boone, Margaret Richards, and Ernest Marie Schenierle.

Dewey committed his life to caring for his family. He is survived by: three sons, Dewey and Janet Greear of Ashland, Ky., Asa and Lydia Greear of St. Augustine, Fla., Dan Greear and life partner Charles Tomlin of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Patricia and James Estep of Ironton, Ohio; one sister, Katherine McGregor of Clawson, Mich.; eleven grandchildren, Matthew and Tina Greear of Parkersburg, W. Va., Mike and Sabrina Brown of South Point, Ohio, Amber Jo Greear of Portland, Ore., Thaddeus Greear of Frankfort, Ky., Jeremiah Greear of Tallahassee, Fla., Sunshine Grant Trimble of Coal Grove, Ohio, Jessica Greear Stotler and Ryan of Campbellsville, Ky., Timothy Greear of Ashland, Ky., Jessica Ritzman of Tocoma, Wash., Jeremy Estep and Nora Estep both of Paintsville, Ky. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dewey provided quality education to high school and college students. He held a Bachelors of Science from Eastern Kentucky University and Masters of Science Rank 1 from Morehead State University. He taught high school in Morgan County, Wolfe County, Breathitt County and Anna, Ohio. He was Professor of Biological Sciences at Ashland Community College, Ashland, Ky. from 1967 to 1983. Retired since 1983 he lived in Ironton, Ohio.

Dewey was a faithful member of the Community Missionary Baptist Church in Ironton, Ohio. He was part of the Cox Masonic Lodge of Wolfe County. Dewey will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sheridan Freewill Baptist Church, South Point, Ohio with Reverends Randy Patrick and Les Boggs officiating. The body will lie in state one hour before the service. Friends may call Monday Sept. 14, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hayes-Phillips funeral Home, 509 South 6th Street Ironton, Ohio. Masonic services will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Sheridan (1941-2009)

James J. Sheridan, 68, of Ironton died Thursday. He was born March 19, 1941 in Ironton and is survived by his wife Sharon Beals Sheridan.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Internment will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton from 5 to 9 p.m. today with a Rosary service at 8:30 p.m.
