Alyene H. Jarrell (1923-2006)

Alyene H. Jarrell, 83, of Ashland, Ky., died Dec. 19, 2006, in Community Hospice Care Center.

She was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Holden, W.Va., a daughter of the late Fred C. and Herma Lawson Hensley.

Mrs. Jarrell was also preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert M. Jarrell, who died in 1975.

She was retired from Columbia Gas Co., was of the Christian faith, was a graduate of Huntington High School, and a member of Eastern Star, Southern Hills Garden Club and numerous bridge clubs.

Surviving are two sons, Jon Jarrell and his wife, Kathy of Ashland and David Jarrell and his wife, Bonnie of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Rebeckah Barber and her husband, David of Nazareth, Pa.; a brother, Jim Hensley of Southern Pines, N.C.; four grandchildren, Ryan Jarrell, Aaron Jarrell and Marcena Jo Jarrell, all of Louisville and Justin Barber of Allentown, Pa.; and a great-granddaughter, Riley Aryn Jarrell of Louisville.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Charles E. Stewart and the Rev. Bill Dillon. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call at 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Barbara Barnett (1931-2006)

Barbara Jean Meredith Barnett, of Ashland, Ky., surrounded by her family passed peacefully at her residence Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at the age of 75.

Born Jan. 12, 1931, in Catlettsburg, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Haskell "Hack" Andrew and Lula Mae Bates Meredith. A longtime employee of G. C. Murphy and C. H. Parsons, she was a member of Beech Street Christian Church, and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Barbara volunteered her time willingly, but her favorite job was preparing taxes for AARP. Her last job was office clerk for Dr. D. H. Donahoe in Catlettsburg.

Barbara was the wife of 57 years to Arley E. Barnett, who preceded her in March of this year. Their home on Ferguson Drive was blessed with four children, two sons, Haskell "Buddy" Barnett and his wife, Brenda of Clearwater, Fla., and James "Rick" Barnett of Ashland and two daughters, Roberta "Bobbie" Farris and her husband, Donald of Ashland and Deana Vonderheide and her husband, Buck of New Philadelphia, Ohio; four sisters, Doris McGuire of Ashland, Marinetta Vanhoose and Diana Davis, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Helen Conley of Dothan, Ala.; 10 wonderful grandchildren, Joe and Kim Farris, Jamey and Andrea Farris, Lisa Farris and Scott Black, Jennifer and Timmy Mickey, Benjamin Barnett, Jay Tyler Barnett, Rikki Lynn Barnett, Rachel Meredith Barnett, Dean Vonderheide, and Samantha Vonderheide; two precious great-granddaughters, Joey Farris and Frankie Farris; a special sister-in-law and close friend, Oletta Barnett of Coal Grove, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Annabelle Simpson; and a host of nieces and nephews, all who will miss her very much..

As well as her parents and husband, Mrs. Barnett was preceded by a very special granddaughter, Lori Ann Vonderheide.

A funeral service to honor the life of Barbara Meredith Barnett will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Frank Hulett and Jim Smedley will offer words of comfort. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery. Those wishing to call on the Barnett family may do so from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Jerry Raymond Miles (1950-2006)

Jerry Raymond Miles, age 56, of Westwood, Ky., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Mr. Miles was born Aug. 4, 1950, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of Clyde Miles of Ashland, Ky., and the late Pansy Lambert Miles, who died on July 17, 2006.

He was a self-employed brick layer and a member of Westwood United Baptist Church.

Additional survivors include his wife of 33 years, Stella Layne Miles of Westwood; a son, David and his wife, Samantha Miles of Westwood; two brothers, Jason D. and his wife, Karen Miles of Lawrence County, Ky., and Clyde A. Miles of Ashland; and three nieces, Vickie Thomas, Tine Lowe, and Cathy Anderson.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at Westwood United Baptist Church by Elder Clarence Thompson Jr. and Elder J.D. Riggs. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Jennifer L. “Jenny” Rickman (1971-2006)

Jennifer L. “Jenny” Rickman, age 35, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born May 29, 1971, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of David E. Preston of Louisiana and June Cantrell and stepfather, Tom of Ashland.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bob and Mildred Mulvaney and grandfather, Estill Preston.

She was a secretary for Student Support Services at Ashland Community Technical College and a member of Holy Family Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Jon D. Rickman of Ashland; a son, Nathan Thomas “Nat” Rickman, at home; her father and mother-in-law, Jack and Debbie Rickman of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Mary Beth Preston of New York, N.Y.; and her paternal grandmother, Goldie Preston of Lexington, Ky.

The Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at Holy Family Church in Ashland by Father Anthony Aduaka.

Lexie Lenora Adams Carnes (1915-2006)

Lexie Lenora Adams Carnes passed from this life into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Community Hospice Care Center.

Lexie was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Cordell, Ky., a daughter of the late Harry and Trinnie Hayes Adams.

She graduated from Ashland Senior High School and attended Ashland Business School. She worked for the F.W. Woolworth Co., leaving there to do her part in WWII by working at Clayton Lambert as an inspector. After the war, she went to work for Blue Ribbon Bus Co., where she met her future husband, Donald D. Carnes.

Leaving the bus company, she went to work for KY-West Virginia Gas Co. where she worked in the payroll department until the time she married Donald D. Carnes on Feb. 14, 1959 and moved to Alexandria, Ky. After working part time for the J.C. Penney Co., she went to work for the Campbell County Water District of Cold Springs, Ky., where she retired after 17 years as the payroll and bookkeeping supervisor. After she and Donald retired, she loved doing her crafts. They would spend the winters in Florida and the summers in Ashland, Ky., having moved to Ashland in 1982.

Lexie was saved on Feb. 24, 1938, at Westwood United Baptist Church and was baptized by Brothers A. Keeton and J.D. Sturgill at the Westwood Falls on April 24, 1938 the first Sunday after Easter. While living in Alexandria, she attended the First Baptist Church of Alexandria with Brother Carl Morton as pastor. Back in Ashland, she attended the First Church of God with her brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Opal Adams and their family. Lexie loved the church especially baking cookies for the Vacation Bible School and taking part in the annual bazaar.

Lexie was preceded in death by her husband, Donald on Jan. 6, 1997 after 39 years of marriage and a brother, Virgil Adams.

Lexie is survived by one brother, Ray Adams of Ashland and two sisters, Maxie Riley and her husband, O.D. of Morehead, Ky., and Doris Jane Kellough and her husband, Charles of Cannonsburg, Ky.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Jack Bugg, the Rev. Tom Pelt and Brother Mike Wilder. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Muriel Kidwell (1915-2006)

Muriel Cecelia O’Neill Kidwell, 91, of Russell, passed away Dec. 18, 2006, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital after a brief illness.

She was the widow of Howard Grove Kidwell.

Mrs. Kidwell was born June 30, 1915, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Anne Marie Casey O’Neill and James Lawrence O’Neill.

She was educated in public schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

Mr. and Mrs. Kidwell were married Oct. 5, 1940.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Deurloo and Isabella Centorani and son-in-law, Edmund P. Aldous Jr.

She is survived by her children, Mary E. Aldous of San Diego, John N. Kidwell and his wife, Donna of Clarksburg, Md., Eileen M. Perkins of Baltimore and Judith F. Kidwell of Russell; her grandchildren, Stephanie C. Kidwell, Sarah M. Eschleman, Brian E. Aldous and Rachel E. Aldous; her great-grandchildren, Nathan D. Eschelman, Erin R. Eschelman and Huxley E. Aldous; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. Dec. 23, 1006 at Holy Family Church by the Rev. Anthony Aduaka. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Ashland.

Friends may call one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.

A recitation of the rosary will immediately precede the funeral mass.

Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods is in charge of arrangements.

Clara Bell Marshall (1904-2006)

Clara Bell Marshall, 102, of South Shore, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in South Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Shore.

She was born Feb. 6, 1904, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late James Thomas Boyles and Nanna Archey Boyles.

She was a dedicated housewife, mother and helper to many families and friends. She was the thread that held the family quilt pieces together. An avid quilter until the age of 100, she pieced quilts for many friends and family.

She was a member of South Shore Church of God, Second and Robbins.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Zachariah Taylor Marshall; four children, John Marshall, twin daughters, Fredia Sue and Linda Marshall and her first born daughter, Avalene Marshall; granddaughters, Johanna Marshall and Ruth Ann Marshall; a grandson, Stephen Wells and a great-granddaughter, Linzi Burton. She is also preceded in death by two sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law; five brothers and one sister.

She is survived by her children, Nellie Alexander and her husband, Luther of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Jenny Hieneman and her husband, Bob of Lloyd, Ky., Ralph Marshall and his wife, Macel of Lloyd, Earl Marshall and his wife, Margaret of Flatwoods, Ky., Cecil Marshall and his wife, Ann of South Shore, Ann Wells of South Shore, Marilyn Bergman and her husband, Bill of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Dottie Evans of LaVale, Md. She also was the proud grandmother to 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She also had many nieces and nephews she dearly loved.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at the South Shore Church of God, Second and Robbins in South Shore with the Rev. Jeremy Teeters and the Rev. Tim Hall officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Route 1, South Shore.

Friends may call at the church from 4 to 9 tonight and at 9 a.m. Friday until time of the service.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.

Alva Baldridge (1911-2006)

Alva Baldridge, 95, of Culp Creek Road, Argillite, Ky., passed from this life Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Baldridge was born Dec. 9, 1911, in Argillite, a son of the late Theodore and Ida Spradlin Baldridge.

Mr. Baldridge was retired from C&O; Railroad, Raceland Car Shops.

He is survived by his wife, Janetta “Nettie” White Baldridge; two sons, Lunda (Virginia) Baldridge and Norman (Frances) Baldridge, both of Argillite; one sister, Anna Pearl Brewer of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup, Ky., by Terry Baldridge. Burial will be in Pierce Cemetery, Culp Creek Road, Argillite.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight and one hour before the funeral on Friday at the funeral home.



William Jennings Marcum (1921-2006)

William Jennings Marcum, 85, of 933 12th Ave., Huntington, W.Va., departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006 after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Crum, W.Va., the eldest son of the late John S. and Lorena Parsley Marcum.

He is survived by five sisters, Doris Catherine Meade of Ashland, Ky., Virginia B. Daloia and her husband, Leonard Daloia of Columbus, Ohio, Lucille Ray and her husband, Clifford Ray of Wake Forest, N.C., Barbara G. Pauley and Lawrence L. Pauley of Huntington and Rita Kay Hereford and her husband, John Hereford of Whitney, Texas; two brothers, Glen S. Marcum and his wife, Joyce Marcum of Huntington and Bruce Marcum and his wife, Cindy Marcum of Huntington; a brother-in-law, Kie Lawrence of South Point, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Carol Marcum of Huntington; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Marcum was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Meade Marcum; a sister, Evelyn Lawrence; a brother, Olen David Marcum; and a brother-in-law, Ernest Meade. He grew up in Crum, W.Va., and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during WWII in the South Pacific Campaign. He was also a member of the Howard P. Hall VFW Post 1064. He was co-founder and president of Amis Systems Inc. of Huntington until his retirement.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday at the Reger Funeral Home with Pastor Trent Eastman. Howard P. Hall VFW Post 1064 will perform military graveside rites.



Louis Kretzer (1932-2006)

Louis O. Kretzer, 74, of Meally, died Tuesday in Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

He was born July 16, 1932, in Johnson County.

His wife, Addie Kretzer, died in 1986.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Deloris Hensley (1939-2006)

Deloris Stambaugh Hensley, 62, of Paintsville, died Wednesday in Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville.

She was born Aug. 25, 1939, in Johnson County.

Her husband, Herman Hensley, died in 2001.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Hensley Family Cemetery in Sitka.

Friends may call anytime Friday and until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.



Terry Gulley

Terry Gulley, 53, of Wallingford, died Wednesday in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

He was the husband of Sandra Kay Weaver Gulley.

Flora Henry (1928-2006)

Flora McCleese Henry, 78, of Indian Creek, died Tuesday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

She was born July 18, 1928, in Indian Creek.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Jesse McCleese in 1984 and Thurman Henry in 1990.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery in Indian Creek.

Patricia Ross (1968-2006)

Patricia Jean Ross, 38, of Patriot, died Monday at home.

She was born Sept. 7, 1968, in Columbus.

Her husband, Anthony P. “Tony” Ross, survives.

Estil Jeffers (1918-2006)

Estil S. Jeffers, 88, of Chesapeake, died Tuesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Lawrence County.

Connie S. Reliford, 60, of South Point, died Sunday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

John J. Dunlap, 92, of Ironton, died Wednesday.

He was born May 27, 1914, in Branchdale, Pa.

His wife, Kathryn Clark Dunlap, died in 1968.
