Brent David Shattles
Brent David Shattles, age 36, passed away suddenly on Nov. 23, 2008. Brent loved the outdoors, led rafting and kayaking trips on the New and Gauley Rivers, and kayaked and backpacked throughout the Eastern and Western U.S.
Brent had a passion and talent for music and particularly loved Southern Gospel music. As a child, he sang and played the violin; but, he found his true love when he picked up the banjo in his late teens and most recently played upright bass with the Chadwick Creek Boys Bluegrass Gospel. Brent was a gifted soccer player. In high school, he played for Paul G. Blazer High School and went on to play at Transylvania University, University of Mobile at Mobile, Ala., Northern Kentucky University (NKU) and in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
He graduated from NKU with a degree in philosophy and attended graduate school at Trinity University in Dublin, Ireland. Brent amazed and delighted his nieces and nephews with card and magic tricks, which still to this day remain a mystery to them. Brent attended Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene. He was a professional tiler, know for the attention to detail he gave to his work in homes on Nantucket Island, Mass. Brent was deeply loved by his family and leaves behind mother and father, Stella and David Shattles; sisters, Sabrina Shattles (Duane Day), Lucretia Voigt (Mark Voigt) and Erin Gullett (Matt Gullett); nieces and nephews, Chelsea, Naomi, and Erik Larsson, Cooper and Holbrook Voigt and Hunter and Hailie Gullett; maternal grandmother, Allean Taylor of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; and many other family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at the Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene by Pastor Kevin Campbell. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Clinton C. Moore Jr. - 1923-2008
Clinton C. Moore Jr., passed away quietly on Nov. 22, 2008, at his home in Edgartown, Mass., after a long illness.
Clinton, age 85, was born Aug. 12, 1923, and raised in Ashland, Ky. He was the son of Clinton Moore and Mary (Davisson) Moore and the brother of Mary Lou (Moore) Putnam. His wife, Emily (Cook) Moore, survives him.
Clint entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1941. His education was interrupted by World War II when he entered the Army Air Corps. He returned after the War to receive his BS in mechanical engineering in 1947 and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
During World War II, he was a B-17 ball turret gunner. He flew missions over Germany from England and participated in battles in Northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland. He was shot down over Germany on New Year’s Eve in 1944 and was a prisoner of war for six months until the end of the War in June 1945. He was discharged from the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant from the 366th Bomb Squadron and received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the battles.
In 1948, he married Emily Cook of Wellesley and enjoyed 60 years of marriage and three children. He was a mechanical engineer for General Electric’s Gas Turbine Division for 30 years and spent the last decade of his career traveling to England, Italy and Norway for special projects. He was the sole inventor on a U.S. patent for a new mechanical seal for an axial flow compressor.
Clinton and Emily retired to Martha’s Vineyard in 1980. He especially loved the summers when his family would come to visit. He was an avid carpenter and gardener and of course, loved anything mechanical. He worked on cars, lawn mowers and anything with an engine.
He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Emily; his daughter, Sarah Davisson Moore of West Tisbury; two sons, David Dudley Moore and his wife, Judy Lin of Houston, Texas, and Paul Clark Moore and his wife, Brenda Seeley Moore of Chicago; and six grandchildren, Lauren DiGiulio of New York City, Michael DiGiulio of San Francisco, Shannon and David Moore of Chicago, Brian Moore of Tampa and Alexander Lin-Moore of Middlebury, Vt. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Lou Putnam, in 2006.

George F. Rice Sr. - 1927-2008
George F. Rice Sr., age 81, of Ashland, Ky., died Monday morning, Nov. 24, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born Jan. 4, 1927, in Hager Hill, Ky., a son of the late Emmitt and Lizzie Perkins Rice. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, David Blair.
He was a retired laborer with Armco with more than 37 years of service, a WWII and Korean Conflict Army veteran and recipient of Purple Heart. He was a very active member of Second Baptist Church, a 32nd degree Mason with the Poage Masonic Lodge, a member of El Hasa Shrine and an avid UK Wildcat fan.
Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Rosolene Howard Rice of Ashland; sons, George Jr. (Genea) Rice and Michael Rice, all of Ashland; a stepson, Danny (Barbara) Blair of Ironton, Ohio; daughters, Kimberly (Tyrus) Luther of Hickory Flat, Miss., and Alison (Daryell) Suttles of Ashland; a host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family members and friends; and a special daughter, Teddy Harper of Ashland.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at the Second Baptist Church, Ashland by Pastor Ed Caudill. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Paul C. Woodburn - 1929-2008
Mr. Paul C. Woodburn, 79, of Seminole, Fla., and formerly of Haverhill, Mass., passed away early Saturday morning in Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Fla.
He was born Aug. 31, 1929, in Haverhill, a son of the late Ralph H. and Ruby O. (Sanborn) Woodburn.
Paul was a retired executive with A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. in Peabody, Danvers, Mass., and Ashland, Ky.
He was a former member of the Riverside Memorial Church in Haverhill and also attended the First Church of Christ in Bradford.
Paul was a member of the Merrimack Lodge F&AM; in Haverhill, and American Chemists Association, was a former Dad Advisor, John Greenleaf Chapter and Chevalier. He also volunteered with the Gus Stavoros Institute to educate children in economics in Largo, Fla.
He was the husband of the late Alice (Brown) Woodburn and is survived by his wife, Carol A. (Roller) Woodburn of Seminole; son, Paul Jeffrey Woodburn and his wife, Lynn of Atkinson, N.H.; daughter, Laurie Ann and her husband, Jerry Moore of Ashland; sister, Barbara J. and her husband, Edmund Smith of Hartford, Conn.; sister-in-law, Nancy and her husband, Davis Guy of E. Kingston, N.H.; grandchildren, Shawn Woodburn and his fiancee, Andrea Toscano, Shayne Moore and his wife, Amanda and Jeremy Moore; great-grandchildren, Cheyene Woodburn, Gracie-Laine Woodburn, Evie Woodburn, Casey Downey, Whitney Whittaker and Carter Layne Moore; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral service on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at noon at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery in Haverhill.

David Ross - 1953-2008
David Ray Ross, 55, of Westwood, passed away Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at his home.
David was born March 23, 1953, in Logan, W.Va., a son of Lula Porter Ross Hartley and the late George Edward Ross. He was the dock manager for Aquila Docks in Kenova, W.Va. He was a member of the 2nd Freewill Baptist Church, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge No. 350 BPOE and NHRA. He was an avid drag racer and loved to work on cars.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael David Ross and his father-in-law and friend, James L. Stephens.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pamela Stephens Ross of Westwood; his mother, Lula Porter Hartley; his stepmother, Patricia Ross of Sarasota, Fla., who helped raise him; a daughter, Melissa Ann Ross of Ashland; his twin brother, Daniel Edward Ross of Marlow, Okla.; two sisters, Lisabeth Ann Cummings of Chicago, Ill., and Karen Ross Tuley of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one granddaughter, Kaya Michael Ross.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by brother Randy Skaggs.

Mildred Lorene Franklin Adams, 86, of Paris, Ky., passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 following an extended illness.
Mildred was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Catlettsburg, a daughter of the late James Marion and Willa Belle Fugitt Franklin. She was a member of Russell Cave Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky. and a former member of Fairview Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Don Franklin and a sister, Pauline Caldwell.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Howard Curtis Adams; two sons, Howard Curtis Adams Jr. and his wife, Linda of Dalton, Ga., and Rocky Dale Adams and his wife, Cheryl of Paris; two brothers, Jim Franklin of Ashland, Ky., and Carl Franklin of Florida; three sisters, Loretta Mott of Lancaster, Ohio, Jewell Priddy of Huntington, W.Va., and Jean Caskey of Mexico Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Christopher (Kristin) Scott Adams, Rhonda (Dusty) Cummins, Robyn (Jarrod) Bentley, Jon (Andrea) Adams, Heather Adams and Mary (Perry) McLawhorn; and 13 great-grandchildren.

James Kelly Adams Jr., 24, of Oldtown, Ky., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 in Garrard County, Ky.
Mr. Adams was born Nov. 7, 1984, in Ashland, Ky., a son of James K. (Samantha) Adams Sr. of Lexington, Ky., and Belinda Vay (Stanley) Sargent of Oldtown.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ray Satterfield; and his grandmother, Ellen Louise Vest.
Surviving are one son, James Kelly Adams III of Nicholasville, Ky.; grandparents, Willie and Geraldine Barnett of Oldtown and Raymond Adams of Garrard County; one brother, Jonathan Adams of Lexington; two sisters, Amanda (Jesse Dale) Banfield of Grayson, Ky., and Jessica Adams of Lexington; two nieces, Kaitlyn Banfield and Chloe Banfield; and two nephews, Caleb Banfield and Jeramiah Banfield.

Butch Wileman - 1941-2008
Richard “Butch” Carman Wileman, 67, of Flatwoods, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 following an extended illness.
Butch was born April 25, 1941, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Edward and Juanita Carman Wileman. He was a 1959 graduate of Russell High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University and Ohio State University. Butch proudly served his country during the Cuban Crisis in the U.S. Navy. He was owner of Wileman’s Dry Cleaners in Flatwoods and Downtown Cleaners in Ashland from 1964 to 1998. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Russell, Smith Lodge No. 775 F&AM;, Indra Consistory Valley of Covington Scottish Rite, El Hasa Shrine, Big Sandy Court No. 172 Royal Order of Jesters, Elks Lodge No. 350 BPOE, Order of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter No. 144 and was a Kentucky colonel.
Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Sue Adkins Wileman; two sons, Richard Lee Wileman of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert Michael Wileman of Kingman, Ariz.; three daughters, Sherrie Jones of Jackson, Miss., Tonia (Wade) Butler of Urania, La., and Nancy (Tony) Banks of Flatwoods; six grandchildren, Erin Masters, Hailey Miles, Blair Richardson, Cory Benton, Chad Wileman, Cassity Wileman and one great-grandchild, Rachael Miles. Butch will be missed by his many special racing friends and lodge buddies.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26. 2008 at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by Dr. Tom Melvin. John Hal Justice, age 60, of Franklin, Ohio, passed away Nov. 23, 2008, at his residence.
He was born in Ironton, Ohio, and lived in Franklin since 1987. He was employed for 28 years as a conductor for CSX Railroad and was currently working part-time as a grounds keeper for Middletown Sportsman’s Club. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vira Gibbs Justice and son, John “Chris” Justice on Oct. 15, 2008; and brother, Gary Justice.
He is survived by one son, Joshua Justice of Hamilton, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Michelle Justice of Huber Heights, Ohio; five grandchildren; father, Lloyd Justice and wife, Bess of Middletown, Ohio; and many good friends.
