Virginia Colleen Sandridge (1928-2009)

Virginia Colleen Sandridge, 80, of Millwood, W.Va., passed away April 27, 2009, at her home.

She was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Ashland, Ky., the daughter of the late Celsus C. and Samantha (Shortridge) Wheeler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin Sandridge Jr.

She attended First United Methodist Church in Ravenswood and was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jeffrey L. Sandridge Sr. and his wife, Cindie, of Elkview, W.Va., Dana Louise (Sandridge) Oster and her husband, Eric, of Mariposa, Calif., Jill Denise (Sandridge) Tidd and her husband, Tim, of Millwood and Benjamin Franklin Sandridge III and his wife, Laura, of Pittsboro, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Simmerman of Ashland; beloved grandchildren Jeramie Shane Gillenwater of Millwood, Nicole Dawn Hayes and her husband, Torren, of Ripley, W.Va., Carolyn Elaine Sandridge of Charleston, W.Va., Samantha Virginia and her husband, Jeremy Woods, of Columbia, S.C., Jeffrey L. Sandridge Jr. of Charleston, Rachel Shay Lowe and Andrew Lowe, both of Merced, Calif., and Eric Wayne Oster and Keith Westley Oster, both of Mariposa; and great-grandchildren Madyson Vail and Kaiden Bethel Hayes, both of Ripley, and Jareth Storm and Ariana Rain Lowe, both of Merced.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Garden of the Redeemer in East Ashland Memorial Gardens in Ashland with Pastor Lance Campbell officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Casto Funeral Home in Ravenswood.

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd W., Charleston, WV 25301.

Ronald H. Riggs (1935-2009)

Ronald H. Riggs, 73, born March 1, 1935, in Ashland, Ky., returned to his Father in Heaven who sent him here on April 27, 2009, after a long courageous battle with PSP.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Brenda; parents Hardin and Aleene (Gabbert) Riggs; a sister, Evelyn Ann; and brothers Samuel and Glenn.

Left behind are his caregiver and eternal mate of 54 years, Rose Marie “Pat,” a son, Larry; daughters Ronna Motley and Cinda Riggs; grandsons Trey and Hunter; granddaughters Mindy (Justus) Sharp, Keisha Riggs (José), Blair and Paige (Ben); great-grandchildren Aaron, Davion, José, Maria and Kaden; a sister-in-law, Terri Riggs; and sisters Mary (Bill) Clark, Donna Griffith and Nancy (Morton) Claxon.

Ron served three years in the Air Force, retired from Drivers Inc. and Wal-Mart and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 47 years. He served in many callings during this time. His most cherished calling was that of home teaching and serving the families he was assigned. He will be sadly missed by his family and all of those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 30 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1001 Doherty Road in Galloway, Ohio, where a funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009. Interment with military honors will be in Alton Cemetery.

Arrangements are made by Schoedinger Hilltop Chapel in Columbus, Ohio.

Louise Jarrell (1920-2009)

Louise Robinson Jarrell now rests peacefully with our Savior after passing early Monday morning, April 27, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mrs. Jarrell was 88 years of age, born Oct. 22, 1920, in Catlettsburg, a daughter of the late Walter and Edna Moore Robinson. Her husband, Sam T. Jarrell Jr., preceded her in 1979.

She was a housewife, homemaker and mother, and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Catlettsburg Church of God.

Louise leaves behind a loving family including three adoring daughters, Maxine McKeand of Huntington, W.Va., Patricia “P.J.” Blankenship and her husband, Jim, of Catlettsburg, and Beverly Shelton and her husband, Fred, of Ashland; a sister, Jeanette Hall of Catlettsburg; eight grandchildren, Debbie Hutchinson (Richard), Keith McKeand, Michael McKeand, Jim Blankenship Jr. (Kim), Thomas Blankenship (Amy), Samantha Broughton (Jason), Carrie McCalvin (Tom) and Doug Shelton (Suzie); 17 great-grandchildren, Lora Odom (Ryan), Richard Hutchinson (Melissa), Keisha McKeand, Shelby McKeand, Brooke McKeand, Larisa Blankenship, Jennifer Blankenship, Celeste Blankenship, Dalton Broughton, Charlee Jo Broughton, Bailey Broughton, Carter Broughton, Landon McCalvin, Hannah McCalvin, Alyssa Shelton, Hayden Shelton and Isabella Shelton; and two great-great-grandchildren, Jude Odom and Joy Odom.

Also preceding her in death was a brother, Walter Robinson.

Graveside services for Mrs. Jarrell will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Catlettsburg Cemetery. Words of comfort will be offered by the Rev. Harold Brown.

Visitation for family and friends will be from noon until service time Thursday at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg.



Jacob Grant Parsons (1999-2009)

Jacob Grant Parsons, 9, of Allen, Ky., passed away Monday, April 27, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 28, 1999, in Paintsville, Ky., the son of Ellis Keith Parsons and Regina Renae McKinney Parsons of Allen.

Jacob was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Martin, Ky.

Survivors include his parents; four brothers, Joshua McKinney, Coltin Parsons and Jonah Parsons, all of Allen, and Gage Parsons of Plant City, Fla.; three sisters, Tyra McKinney, Mollie Parsons and Caroline Parsons, all of Allen; his maternal grandparents, Elmer and Cindy Parsons; and his paternal grandparents, Dale and Hilda McKinney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Martin with the elder of the church officiating. Burial will be in Family Cemetery in Allen.

Visitation is after 7 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Home in Martin and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.



Bertalene “Betty” Edwards (1940-2009)

Bertalene “Betty” Edwards, 68, of Blaine, Ky., passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at her home.

She was born July 2, 1940, in Sandy Hook, Ky., a daughter of the late Jim and Hazel Skaggs Blankenbeckler.

She was a retired cook at Blaine Elementary School and a member of Caines Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Edwards; two sisters, Yvonne Reinholtz and Dorene Blankenbeckler; two brothers, Willie Blankenbeckler and Olen Blankenbeckler; and two grandchildren, Isiah Edwards and Matthew Edwards.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandy Edwards of Blaine, Patty Edwards of Blaine and Mary Bloomfield of Louisa, Ky.; two sons, Emory (Beth) Edwards of Ulysses, Ky., and Gary (Dorothy) Edwards of Blaine; two sisters, Ottie Mae Skaggs of Clawson, Mich., and Flora Walker of Olive Hill, Ky.; a brother, Bert Blankenbeckler of Olive Hill; and six grandchildren, Jonathan Boggs, Nathan (Shana) Boggs, Patrick Boggs, Andrew Edwards, Ethan Edwards and Edmond Edwards.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at Caines Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Ford McKenzie and Bondi Salyers officiating. Burial will be in Wilson-Skaggs Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home in Louisa and after 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.



Thomas “Tom” Pifer

Thomas “Tom” Pifer, 65, of Russell, died Tuesday at his residence.

Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Frances Brown (1937-2009)

Frances Pauline Bishop Brown, 71, of Xenia, Ohio, formerly of Olive Hill, died Saturday at her residence.

She was born July 2, 1937, in Carter County.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Bishop Cemetery at Grahn.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Virgil Bibee (1938-2009)

Virgil Stonewall Marion Bibee, 70, of Clearfield, died Monday at his residence.

He was born Dec. 10, 1938.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Clark Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.



Janie Peyton (1950-2009)

Janie Peyton, 59, of West Liberty, died Tuesday in Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital in West Liberty.

She was born March 14, 1950, in Huntington, W.Va.

Her husband, Harold Peyton, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Peyton Cemetery in West Liberty.

There will be no visitation.

Ida Malone (1925-2009)

Ida Leona Cox Malone, 93, of Morehead, died Sunday in Hilltop Lodge Nursing Home in Owingsville.

She was born June 21, 1915, and was the wife of the Rev. Alton Hodge Malone.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hopewell Funeral Home in Plant City, Fla. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery.

Melinda Lewis (1965-2009)

Melinda Sue Lewis, 43, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday in Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.

She was born July 7, 1965, in Maysville.

Her husband, Tim Reed Lewis, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery at Ribolt.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Fern O’Brien (1926-2009)

Fern O’Brien, 82, of Ironton, died Sunday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Detroit.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Memorial Gardens.

There will be no visitation.
