Dorothy Serra (1934-2009)
Dorothy Ann Serra, 74, of Hagerstown, Md., formerly of Kinwat Avenue in Essex, Md., passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at her home.
She was born June 10, 1934, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Arlie and Mayme (Miller) Sparks. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Essex. She retired from Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she was secretary to the vice president. Her husband, Frank Serra, passed away in 2007.
Dorothy will always be remembered for the love she gave her family and her generous spirit.
She is survived by two daughters; Linda Wagner and husband Jerry of Hagerstown and Karen King and husband Douglas of White Marsh, Md.; sisters Mary Stanley of Ashland and Martha Cripple of Findlay, Ohio, brother Edward Sparks of Ashland; grandchildren Jennifer Ford of Perry Hall, Md., Michael B. Wagner of Bel Air, Md., and Jamie Thomas Wagner of Hagerstown; and great-grandchildren Haley and Brendon Ford, Kaitlyn, Megan and Hunter Wagner and Jack Thomas.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Maxie Tackett; and four brothers, Arlie Sparks, John Sparks, James Sparks and Joseph Sparks.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. Jack Ewald officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 1 at the funeral home.

Frances Marie Brown (1922-2009)
Frances Marie “Granny” Brown, 87, of Greenup, died Thursday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Xenia, Ohio, the daughter of the late Linzie and Amanda “Mandy” Jarrell Damron. She was the wife of James F. Brown, who died on June 26, 1980.
She was a cashier for the Russell YMCA and a member of Rebekah Lodge and the Democratic Woman’s Club. She attended Greenup Christian Church.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Roger E. Brown, who died on May 22, 1998.
Survivors include a son, James B. (Carolyn) Brown of Raceland; two daughters, Ellen (Don) Traylor and Joyce Burch, both of Greenup; a sister, Ester Childers of Mouthcard; and eight grandchildren, Lori Brown Stewart of Greenup, Jim (Tina) Burch of Rineyville, Beth (Paul) Besco of Pedro, Ohio, Mike (Brandy) Brown of Ashland, Melinda (Morgan) Elkins of Raceland, Louie Baker of Greenup, Kim Vanhorne of Hitchins and Charlie Ed (Tina) Burch of Wurtland; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup with Brother Jack Edwards and Earl Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery at Lloyd.

Dallas J. Stephens (1937-2009)
Dallas J. Stephens, 71, of Sandy Hook, Ky., passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.
Dallas was born July 26, 1937, in Fleming County, the son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Velearie Mable Collier Stephens.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Scottie Wayne Stephens; two brothers, Denver and Curtis Stephens; and five infant brothers and sisters.
Dallas spent his life helping others. He worked at the State Reception Center in Louisville, Ky., giving juveniles guidance for about 10 years. He also worked at North East Area Development and spent more than 30 years working as an EMT with the Elliott County Ambulance Service. He was also a former volunteer firefighter in Elliott County. He was of the Enterprise Baptist faith.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Adkins Stephens; three children, Robin Lynn and husband Donald Weddington, Karen Kay and husband Dale Worthington and Dallas James and wife Connie Stephens, all of Sandy Hook; six grandchildren, Nathan Weddington, Brittani and Samantha Worthington and Emily, Daniel and Aaron Stephens; a stepgrandson, Jeremy Worthington; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Noah and Gabe Worthington; and five sisters and brothers, Dora Turner of Sandy Hook, William Stephens of Frankfort, Opal Howard and Ronnie and Jimmy Stephens, all of Sandy Hook.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, May 1, 2009, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook with Brother Jason Ison and Brother Gary Madden officiating. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Dewey Moore, Floyd Blanton, Jamie Crose, Bryan Samples, Timmy Adkins and Tommy Stephens.
Honorary pallbearers will be Nathan Weddington, Daniel Stephens, Aaron Stephens, Jeremy Worthington and Ricky Mabry and Nick Goodpaster.

Daniel Lee Craft, 59, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Greenup County, died Tuesday in Jacksonville.
He was born June 5, 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Load Christian Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Bush Family Cemetery in Little White Oak.
