Bethal Faye Church Biggs Dickens - 1939-2009

Bethal Faye Church Biggs Dickens, 69, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Sept. 12, 1939, in Greasy Ridge, Ohio, a daughter of the late Bliss Church and Margaret York Church.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samual A. Biggs in 1984.

She was a housewife and member of the Church of God.

Survivors include three sons, Samual David Biggs of Deland, Fla., Austin Reed Biggs of Russell, Ky., and Richard Dolan Biggs of Grayson, Ky.; a daughter, Sandra Elaine Young Bailey of Catlettsburg, Ky.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Randy Church of West Liberty, Ohio, David Church of Angola, Ind., and Danny Church of Hamilton, Ind.; and five sisters, Yvonne Payne of Kendelleville, Ind., Annie Veva Church of Springfield, Mo., Kay Church and Jean Church, both of Florida and Opal Ford of Ironton, Ohio.

The funeral was at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by Bishop Steve Mays. Burial was in Ogle Cemetery on Route 507 in Buchanan.



Ruth Rice Short - 1943-2009

Ruth Rice Short, age 65, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Woodland Oaks Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 7, 1943, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Luther Rice and Mary Gibbs Rice.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Short in 2008; three brothers and one sister.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Ray (Michelle) Short of Ashland; two daughters and a son-in-law, Heavenly Penny (Paul) Abrams and Melissa Gehringer, all of Ashland; five grandchildren including grandsons and spouses, Pokie and Amanda Abrams, Brandon and Sam Abrams, and Daniel Gehringer and granddaughters, Heather Gehringer and Tiffany Short; three great-grandchildren, Lakin Abrams, Marley Abrams and Harley Abrams; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Nell (Charlie) Gillum of Ashland, Josephine (George) Stapleton of Apple Grove, W.Va., Betty Skaggs of Michigan and Gladys (Chris) Martinez of Washington.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Rick Kitchen. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Winfred Roseberry - 1914-2009

Winfred Roseberry, 94, of Catlettsburg, surrounded by his loving family went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 2, 2009, after his passing in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mr. Roseberry was born Aug. 17, 1914, in Morgan County, Ky., a son of the late William Harrison and Sarah Hill Roseberry.

Winfred was a veteran of World War II serving honorably with the United States Army and the owner of Roseberry’s Upholstry. He enjoyed playing cards, sports, coaching the Roseberry Rockets, and working on cars.

Sadly left behind is an adoring family including his wife of 55 years, Doy White Roseberry. Their home was blessed with three sons, Bryan Keith Roseberry and Gary Roseberry, both of Catlettsburg, and Greg Roseberry and his wife, Shelby of Ashland, and three daughters, Debbie Miller and her husband, William of Catlettsburg, Sue Roseberry of Ashland, and Jennifer Johnson and her husband, James of Catlettsburg.

From his previous marriage, Winfred was also blessed with two sons, Harrison Roseberry of Seattle, Wash., and Ray Roseberry of Grayson, Ky., and three daughters, Wanda Pennington of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Loretta Hendrick of Seattle, and Phyllis Porter of Etna, Ohio. Also surviving are 18 wonderful grandchildren, and seven precious great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Cody Roseberry, Rinfred Roseberry, and Willard Roseberry; and six sisters, Lucy Knipp, Nora Kelley, Pearl Hicks, Bess Roseberry, Clara Collins, and Bertha Johnson.

Funeral services for Mr. Roseberry will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. A message of comfort will be offered by Pastor Stan Williams. Final rest will follow a committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland with military rites.

Those wishing to call on the Roseberry family may do so between the hours of 11 a.m. and service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.



Joyce Ann Douglas Watson - 1949-2009

Joyce Ann Douglas Watson, 59, of Flatwoods, Ky., was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at her home following an extended illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Watson was born Oct. 15, 1949, in Flatwoods, a daughter of the late James and Sylvia Adams Douglas. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Keith Douglas; and her daughter, Sherry Lynn Watson.

She was a member of the Sand Gap United Baptist Church. She was also a loving mother to many children over the years which she called her “adopted children.” She was loved by so many people, there are too many to name.

Survivors are her loving husband of 41 years, Elder Glenn Watson Jr.; two sons, James G. Watson and his wife, Minnie K. of Rush, Ky., and Larry L. Watson and his fiancee, Sarah E. Oliver of Flatwoods; two sisters, Connie Dehart and Bonnie Baldridge, both of Flatwoods; two grandsons, Jerry Wayne Craft Jr. of Raceland, Ky., and Jacob N. Watson of Rush, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Sand Gap United Baptist Church by Elders Marshall Oliver, Clayton Oliver and Golden Sloan. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Pallbearers will be James Watson, Larry Watson, Arlie Baldridge, Bobby May, Mike French, Jeremy Jones, Damon Matthews and Pete Hensley.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Evans Funeral Home in Raceland.



Mollie Bowling - 1920–2009

Mollie Esta Daniel Bowling, 88, of Flatwoods, passed away Saturday afternoon, May 2, 2009, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods.

Mollie was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Morgan County, Ky., a daughter of the late Peter and Cynthia Fannin Daniel.

She was a former seamstress with Ashland Crafts and a retired cook and server with Russell Independent School System having worked in the Middle and High School cafeterias. Mollie was a Christian for more than 70 years and was very active with the United Baptist Church.

She was a life member and along with her second husband, helped establish the first POW Chapter in our area, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Laureate Lambda Chapter and a member of T.O.P.S. Kentucky chapter #59 of Flatwoods.

In addition to her parents, Mollie was preceded in death by two husbands, Emory Lowell Daniels and Vernon Edgar Bowling and two brothers, Norman Daniel and Marvin Daniel.

She is survived by five children, Dorothy (Paul) Lyons of Flatwoods, Nancy (Robert) Galloway of Charlotte, N.C., Mary (James) Westfall of Flatwoods, Bruce (Cheryl) Bowling of Versailles, Ky., and Kathy Prichard of Raceland; 15 grandchildren, Rodney Lyons, Teresa Cox, Alan Lyons, Linda Clark, Mollie Sirvent, Brian Westfall, Matthew Westfall, Robert Lyons, Stacey Bailey, Eric Bowling, Evan Bowling, Trevor Prichard, Tiffani Prichard, Katie Hern and Misty Jenkins; 38 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Elders J. D. Riggs, Clarence Thompson Jr. and A.J. Williamson. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Wednesday.



Jimmy Ray Fritz Sr. - 1938-2009

Jimmy Ray Fritz Sr., 70, of Greenup, Ky., died Monday, May 4, 2009 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born June 13, 1938, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Joseph N. and Mary Allen Fritz.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dana M. Cooper Fritz on Sept. 18, 1991; and a daughter, Pamela Diane Fritz on July 25, 1967.

He was a retired welder for CSX and a member of South Portsmouth Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jimmy Ray Bo Fritz Jr. of Greenup; two daughters, Mary E. Curtis and her husband, Larry of South Shore, Ky., and Monya D. Cooper and her husband, James of Jonesville, La.; a brother, Bill Fritz of Wurtland, Ky.; a sister, Glennis Trail of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Junior Moore. Burial will be in Plum Grove Cemetery in Greenup.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 and one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Evelyn Triplett, 92, of Ashland, died April 23 in Titusville, Fla.

Monnie Carolyn Horton, 70, of Grayson, died Saturday in Carter Nursing and Rehabiliation Center in Grayson.

She was born March 24, 1939, in Carter County.

Her husband, Elijah Joe Horton, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Entombment will be in East Carter Memory Gardens.

Don Litton, 72, of Springfield, Ohio, formerly of Elliott County, died Saturday at his residence.

He was born Oct. 26, 1936, in Elliott County.

Vonnie Ellen Jones Campbell, 81, of Banner, wife of the late Ray “Shag” Campbell, died May 1 at her residence.

She was born Dec. 19, 1927, in Banner.

Jeffery Ray Hogge, 53, of Morehead, died Sunday at his residence.

He was born July 9, 1955.

He was the husband of Tina Walker Hogge.

Wanda Irene Cooper, 71 of Lexington, died Sunday in Sayre Christian Nursing Home in Lexington.

She was born May 4, 1937, in Poplar Flats.

Her husband, Corbett Cooper, died in 1996.

He was born May 12, 1920, in Paintsville.

His wife, Sylvia Arrowood Vanhoose, preceded him in death.

Robert Drown Sr. - 1927-2009

Robert Irvin Drown Sr., died Sunday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born May 30, 1927, in Wayne, W.Va.

His wife, Brenda Beaver Drown, survives.
