Evelyn Triplett - 1917-2009
Evelyn Triplett, 92, of Ashland, Ky., died April 23 in Titusville, Fla., after a prolonged illness.
Mrs. Triplett was born March 26, 1917, in Grayson, Ky., a daughter of the late George and Lily Reeves.
She was the oldest living member of Central Baptist Church and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Triplett was a graduate of Morehead State University. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Denton, Ky., at the start of her career and spent 30-plus years teaching in the Boyd County School District. After her retirement from the Boyd County system, she spent more than 10 years as a substitute teacher in the Titusville school system.
Mrs. Triplett was also preceded in death by her husband, Orban “Pete” Triplett, and a daughter, Georgetta Pennington Stamper.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Bertha Beckett of St. Albans, W.Va.; a daughter, Roberta Cook Yon of Titusville; her grandsons, the Rev. Bill and Jaylynn Cook of Louisville, Ky., Robert and Donna Cook of Asheville, N.C., Rob and Jeanne Stamper of Lexington, Ky., and Dave and Patty Stamper of Winchester, Ky.; her great-grandsons, Zach Stamper, Ross Stamper, Paul Cook and John Cook; two great-granddaughters, Lydia Ring and Sara Stamper; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. May 9 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Joed Rice and the Rev. Bill Cook. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Bob Virgin - 1936–2009
Robert Eugene “Bob” Virgin, 72, of Westwood, widower of Barbara Ann Murphy Virgin, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009.
Bob was born June 12, 1936, in Westwood, a son of the late Homer and Clarice Captola Barber Virgin.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a radioman and was a retired ball glove lacer with Wilson Sporting Goods. He was a member of American Legion Clarence Fields Post 76.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Murphy Virgin.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Tammy Akers) Virgin Jr. of Flatwoods and James “Jimmy” (Debbie) Virgin of Ashland; a daughter, Kathy (Mitch) McNabb of Westwood; a sister, Janice Hitchcock of Westwood; two grandchildren, James Robert Ray Virgin and Kathyrn Ann Michelle Virgin; a special niece, Christy Carroll; a special great-niece, Ali Carroll; and a host of extended family and friends.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Hutchinson Cemetery. Military service will be by Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Jay F. Johnson - 1939-2009
Jay F. Johnson, 69, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, May 3, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 24, 1939, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Clyde Johnson and Ruth Ballard Johnson.
He was retired from Marathon Ashland. He was a member of the Ohio and Kentucky National Guard for 24 years and a member of New Valley Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Bluebaum Johnson; a son and daughter-in-law, Howard (Melissa) Johnson of Ashland; three grandchildren, Blake, Megan and Chandler, all of Ashland; and a sister, Jeanine Pinkerman of South Point, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Mike Gullett. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Gary Clare - 1960-2009
Gary Ray Clare, 49, of Wurtland, Ky., passed away Monday, May 4, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.
Mr. Clare was born Feb. 17, 1960, in Ashland, Ky., a son of Carolyn McNeal Clare of Wurtland and the late James M. Clare.
He was a janitor at Wurtland Elementary School. He was an avid University of Kentucky and Washington Redskins fan.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Thomas A. Clare, and a brother, Steven Clare.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Teresa Yvonne Greathouse Clare; two sons, Zachary (Nichole Bell) Clark of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Gary “JR” Clare Jr. of Wurtland; a daughter, Tiffaney (Aaron) Prince of Westwood, Ky.; five brothers, Thomas Clare of Wurtland, Bradley Clare of Mount Sterling, Ky., James Clare of Victorville, Calif., William Clare of Ashland and Ryan Clare of Mount Sterling; a sister, Robin Clare Carr of Apple Valley, Calif.; and two very special granddaughters, Kierstin Clark and Madison Prince, who were the loves of his life.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Tim French. Burial will be in Caroline Cemetery in Raceland, Ky.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.

Brenda Holbrook - 1945-2009
Brenda Gail Holbrook, 63, of Stout, Ohio, died Tuesday in Otway, Ohio.
She was born Oct. 17, 1945, in Garrison.
Her husband, John W. Holbrook Sr., survives.

Jeffery Lee Wilson, 54, of East Point, died Monday in Pikeville Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 9, 1954, in Cambridge, Ohio.
His wife, Wanda George Wilson, survives.
