Gloria Jean Chapman Gussler (1952-2009)
Gloria Jean Chapman Gussler, age 57, of Westwood, Ky., formerly of Coal Grove, Ohio, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 24, 1952, in Lawrence County, Ohio, a daughter of the late Ray Chapman and Sadarae Collins Chapman.
She was a medical transcriptionist, a member of International Golden Kay Honor Society, a graduate of Dawson Bryant High School in 1970, attended Ohio University Southern where she was on the dean’s list and a member of Ashland Theater Guild.
Surviving are her soulmate, Gene Gussler of Westwood; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Larry Boggs of Coal Grove, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Crystal Angela (Jamie) Reihs of Ashland, Ky.; stepgrandchildren, Tanner, Austin and Madison; nephews, Christopher Boggs, David and Dawnya Boggs, and Julie and David Rutherford; and great-nephews, Zachary, Zane and Zayden.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton, Ohio, by Pastor Norm Staker.
Visitation was one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Carlis Smallwood (1943-2009)
Carlis Ray Smallwood, 66, husband of Diane Kathleen Smallwood of Catlettsburg, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009, following a brief illness.
Carlis was born April 17, 1943, in Dorton, Ky., to the late Harvey and Icy Osborne Smallwood. Carlis proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a HVAC specialist. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
He loved UK sports, traveling, cooking, being outdoors and spending time with his family. Carlis was a man of few words and a big heart. He will be greatly missed. A sincere thanks to all that touched his live in a positive way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Smallwood.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Kathleen Meyer Smallwood of Catlettsburg; a son, Christopher Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio; four daughters, Michelle Webb of Morehead, Ky., Amanda Lewis of Morehead, Ky., and Maria Smallwood and Michelle Smallwood, both of West Virginia; five grandchildren, Alexandra Webb, Samantha Webb, Tiffani Smallwood, Aaron Lewis and Emilie Lewis; two brothers, Leonard Smallwood of Ashland and James Smallwood of Argillite; four sisters, Stella Bradshaw of Days Creek, Ore., Louise Taylor of Catlettsburg, and Linda Hardeman and Angie Salyers, both of Ashland.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Father John P. Noe.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Thursday.
Wilma Jeanette Burgess VanHorn (1927-2009)
Wilma Jeanette Burgess VanHorn, 81, of Raceland, Ky., died May 10, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Raceland, a daughter of the late McKinley and Elizabeth Vanderhoof Burgess. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Chester E. Burgess and two sisters, Garnette Robinson and Arbutis Baldridge.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Richard VanHorn of Raceland; a daughter, Marilyn (Richard) Stevens of Russell, Ky.; grandchild, Justin Michael Stevens of Russell and great-grandchild, J.M. Stevens of Russell.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at First Church of the Nazarene in Flatwoods, Ky., by the Rev. Roger Bonzo. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Shirley Walker Maggard (1914-2009)
Shirley Walker Maggard, 95, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 10, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was born Feb. 14, 1914, in Beetle, Ky., a daughter of the late Harry and Betty Adams Walker.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Rockwall United Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Virgil Maggard; one son, John Maggard; one daughter, Betty McDavid; one sister, Arlene Crawford and one grandson, Robert Maggard. Her survivors include one daughter, Judy Thompson of Russell, Ky.; three sons, Bill Maggard, Dave Maggard and Tony Maggard, all of Grayson; four brothers, Edgar Walker of Norfolk, Va., Wilbur Walker of Winfield, W.Va., Calvin Walker of Belphre, Ohio, and Leondas Walker of Grayson; six grandchildren, Scott McDavid, Chris McDavid, Renae Maggard, Nancy Maggard, Adam Thompson and Lorna Willis; five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Homer Bowling and J.D. Riggs, officiating. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, May 12, and Wednesday after 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
