Eleanor Beetham Harvey - 1933-2009

Eleanor Beetham Harvey, 76, passed on Monday, May 18, 2009, because of medical complications at King’s Daughters Medical Center.

A daughter of Mary E. and Samuel Beetham, she was born Feb. 14, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she spent her childhood.

She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma at Ohio Wesleyan University, where she graduated in 1955 and married Samuel D. Harvey the same year.

She was a loving and devoted mother to her three children, a member of the first board of the Paramount Arts Center and a member of the DAR. Her passions were sailing and traveling abroad and she had a profound love of animals, adopting and caring for many throughout her life.

She is survived by her brother, Sam K. Beetham of Mundelein, Ill.; her husband, Samuel D. Harvey; a son, Steven M. Harvey of Ashland, Ky.; a daughter, Pamela Harvey-Rath; and grandchildren Breana, Meriel and Nerina Rath of New York City, N.Y.

Friends are invited to visit the Harvey family at their home at 2241 Hillcrest Road in Ashland on Sunday, May 24, 2009 from 3 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the ASPCA or a local animal shelter.

Arrangements are under the direction of Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland.

Helen Ramsdell - 1923-2009

Helen Ramsdell, 86, of Catlettsburg, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, May 18, 2009, at the home of her daughter with her loving family by her side.

She was the oldest living resident of Laurel Creek and was often called “the mayor.”

Mrs. Ramsdell was born May 11, 1923, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Roy and Lena Lucy Twinam.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ramsdell; a son-in-law, Ralph Arrington Jr.; and a brother, William Twinam.

She was a devoted homemaker and a member of England Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Keith (Karen) Ramsdell of Catlettsburg; two daughters, Barbara (Herb) Clevenger of Rush, Ky., and Anita Arrington of Catlettsburg; a sister, Cathleen Wellman of Catlettsburg; grandchildren John Carey, Erin Ramsdell, Shannon McGlone, Brian Ramsdell and the late Jason Arrington; great-grandchildren Jordan Followay, Braiden Trace Corey and Bryce Brian Ramsdell; nieces Billie Caldwell and Pam Ramsdell; nephews Ricky Wellman and Billy Ramsdell; and her best friend, Ruby Hensley of Catlettsburg.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at England Hill Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 20, 2009, at the church.

Roy Moore Jr. - 1923-2009

Roy Moore Jr., 85, of Frazer Branch, Oldtown, Ky., passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wurtland, Ky.

Mr. Moore was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Oldtown, a son of the late Roy and Cynthia Boggs Moore.

He was a retired farmer, a retired carman helper with CSX Railroad, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Scouts and Raiders.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Lois Ann Vanhorn Moore; three daughters, Pamela Jean (Frank) Day of Mayslick, Ky., Deborah Denise (Bruce) Meade of Pontiac, Mich., and Sandra Gail (Jeff) Rice of Hitchins, Ky.; a brother, Cecil “Dick” (Betty) Moore of Oldtown; two sisters, Helen Brown of Greenup, Ky., and Ruby Chan of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, David Roy (Becky) Bradford of Oldtown, Denise Bradford of Hitchins, Shawn Moore of Lexington, Ky., and Michael E. Garvin of Flatwoods, Ky.; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford “Pip” Moore, Jim Moore and Les Moore; and two sisters, Lillian Saulsberry and Delores Bellew.

Graveside funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by Brother Danny Brown, with military rites by James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore, Ky.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. todasy at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup.



Beverly Ann Hamilton Ashcraft - 1958-2009

Beverly Ann Hamilton Ashcraft, 51, of Greenup County, Ky., died May 18, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

She was born Feb. 1, 1958, in Ironton, Ohio, a daughter of the late William J. and Betty Lou Turley Hamilton.

She was also preceded in death by brothers Jimmy and Jeff Hamilton.

She was a homemaker and attended Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Stanley Ashcraft of Oldtown; daughters Dusti (Randal) Lewis of Wurtland, Ky., and Leigha (Chris) Stone of Ashland, Ky.; sister Teresa Brown (Greg Moore) of Oldtown; grandchildren Amber and Hannah Lewis; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at noon Friday, May 22 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Pastor John Lybrook and Bobby Carpenter. Burial will be in Hamilton Brown Cemetery in Oldtown.

Stonewall “Stoney” Mason - 1923-2009

Stonewall “Stoney” Mason, 85, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 1923, in Elliott County, in Isonville, Ky., and was the son of the late Jesse James and Amy Lue Lester Mason.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Maxine Lyons Mason, on April 6, 2008; a brother and sister-in-law, Kansas and Monnie Mason; a brother, Woodrow Mason, who was missing in action during World War II; and sisters Lily Ridgeway, May Damron, Iva Kelly, Hazel Rigsby and Lorene Margaret Mason.

Mr. Mason is survived by a son, Darrell Raymond Mason of Orlando, Fla.; and a daughter, Linda Cheryl and husband Francis Hutchinson of Flatwoods, Ky. Other survivors include a granddaughter, Alicia (Derek) Clark of Ironton, Ohio; two grandsons, Darrell Ashley Mason of San Francisco, Calif., and Philip Mason Hutchinson of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Lloyd Mason of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Boyd Mason of Sandy Hook, Ky.; and a sister, Wanda Lue Skaggs of Hitchins, Ky.

Additionally, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece Benita Mason Vaughan and special nephew Billy Mason, along with many friends and relatives.

Mr. Mason served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Afterwards, he honorably served his country in the United States Army Air Force, serving as a staff sergeant in England during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Elliott County and later married the love of his life, Maxine Lyons, on March 3, 1948.

He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 248 in Ashland, Ky., with 57 years of service.After retiring, he returned to his love of farming and caring for the land. He was of the Baptist faith. Stoney was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 22 at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty, Ky., by the Rev. Bob Williams and the Rev. Paul Preston. Burial will be in Elliott County Memorial Gardens in Sandy Hook.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Ethel A. Dodson, 87, of Ashland, died Tuesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Joshua Moore - 1984-2009

Joshua Tyler Moore, 24, of Ashland, husband of Sara Lafferty Moore, died Tuesday in University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Jerry Carey - 1939-2009

Jerry D. Carey, 69, of Ironton, died Friday in Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born Aug. 21, 1939, in Lawrence County.

His wife, Rebecca “Grone” Carey, survives.

The funeral will be at noon at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.



Dorothy Jenkins - 1938-2009

Dorothy Mae Jenkins, 70, of Ironton, died Monday at her residence.

She was born Dec. 5, 1938, in Lawrence County.

Her husband, Hughie Franklin Jenkins, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon Friday at the funeral home.

Curtis Ball - 1931-2009

Curtis Donovan Ball, 77, of Pedro, died Tuesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

He was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Pedro.

His wife, Ruth A. Webb Ball, survives.

A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Vernon Furnace Cemetery.
