Norma Joyce “Germ” Griggs (1939-2009)
Norma Joyce “Germ” Griggs, 69, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Aug. 30, 1939, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Charles D. Deerfield and Julia Coleman Deerfield.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lucas of Hammond, Ind.
She was a retired clerk in the PVA office with 23 years of service. She attended First Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Holy Family High School reunion committee. She was a 1957 graduate of Holy Family, attended Eastern Kentucky University and enjoyed hanging out with her granddaughter and granddog, Jules.
Surviving are her husband, Daniel “Danny” Griggs; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cheryl Stewart of Ashland; a granddaughter, Abbi; and a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Linda Deerfield of Ashland.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Phil Haney. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Margie Faye Newsome Adams (1937-2009)
Margie Faye Newsome Adams, 71, of Ashland, Ky., died of pancreatic cancer on May 26 in King’s Daughters Medical Center with her family at her bedside.
She was born June 6, 1937, in Louisa, Ky., a daughter of the late Delbert and Opal Ison Newsome.
She was former owner and operator of M&L; Boutique. She was an employee of Topping and Christian for many years making custom-made draperies. She also worked many years in retail for Woolco, Watsons and Value City as a department manager, worked at Parsons and Mark-Matthews and was manager of Jo-Ann Fabrics at Midtown. She was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church of Ashland.
She was a loving wife and mother and will be sadly missed.
Surviving are her loving husband of 54 years, Lowell Q. Adams of Ashland; a sister, Sandy Fraley and her husband, Randy, of Ashland; a brother, David Newsome and his wife, Judy, of Ashland; a son, David Adams and his wife, Maria, of Ashland; daughters Joan Moore of Ashland and Diana Canfield (Wes Cope) of Ashland; three grandchildren, Brittany (Nikki) Moore, Matthew Canfield and Dr. Christopher Adams; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Monty Cooper. Intombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Christopher Cantrell (1989-2009)
Christopher “Guy” Cantrell, 20 of Rush, Ky., stands in the presence of his Savior after his passing on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Chris was born March 26, 1989, in Ashland, Ky., the son of Carol Hardeman Cantrell, stepfather Brian Brown of Rush and Michael Cantrell of Westwood, Ky.
Chris was an exceptionally bright young man who set high expectations for himself, at the age of 16 graduating with high honors from Fairview High School Class of 2005. He was a Thundering Herd fan. He accepted Christ at the age of 11 and was a member of Mount Zion Freewill Baptist Church.
Along with his parents, he is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Jeanetta Cantrell of Westwood; his maternal grandmother, Joyce Hardeman of Ashland and Mammy and Papaw Brown; a brother, Brantley Snider of Flatwoods; a sister, Lauren Cantrell of Rush; two sisters by marriage, Samantha Brown and Sydney Brown, both of Rush; his special nephew and friend, Bentley Green; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved Chris dearly and will miss him deeply.
Preceding him in death are Chris’ grandfathers, George Hardeman and Clyde Cantrell.
A funeral service of remembrance will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Steve Stapleton will offer words of comfort and reassurance, with a personal eulogy by the Rev. Paul Cox. Final rest will follow a committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Stella Lively (1931-2009)
Stella Mae Sexton Lively, 77, of Ashland, widow of James Lively, passed away Friday, May 22, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
Stella was born Oct. 19, 1931, in Bald Knob, W.Va., a daughter of the late Thurman and Leona Prince Sexton.
In addition to her parents and husband, Stella was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Lewallen; a brother, Kelly Sexton; two infant siblings; a grandson, James William Patrick; and a loving stepmother, Martha Fannin.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Sharon Lee (David) Kucera of Urbandale, Iowa, Rebecca Ann Patrick of Ashland, Ky., and Beverly Jean (Amos) Daniels of Ashland; a sister, Martha Rash of Bald Knob; a brother, Homer Sexton of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren, Joyce Ann (Eric) Griffith, David Allen (Anna) Rigsby, Amy (Michael) Lindley and Amos J. Daniels II; and six great-grandchildren, Chris Daniels, Jordan Mylam, Eric Griffith, Cody Griffith, Jeffery Lindley and Jennifer Lindley.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Pastor Steve Ruby. Burial followed in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
William Robert Adams (1930-2009)
William Robert Adams, 78, of Inwood, W.Va., passed away after an extended illness on Friday, April 24, 2009.
He was born Sept. 13, 1930 in Willard, Ky., the son of the late Sylvester and Carolyn McKinney Adams.
Bill worked and traveled with Pennsylvania Drilling Co. and worked on the Alaska pipeline. He also worked for 50 years with Air Power as an explosives expert and heavy equipment operator. He was a born-again Christian.
He is survived by his wife, Phoebe Henry Adams; a son, Robert Adams and wife Carolyn of Hedgesville, W.Va.; a daughter, Carol Williams and husband Andy of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Jason Miller, Jason Butts, James Heck and Brooke Heck; a brother, Jimmy Adams and wife Dreama; two sisters, Charlotte Kelley and Gloria and husband Joe Savage; and longtime friends the Butts family, Susie Smeltzer, Troy Ballard and countless others.
He was preceded in death by a son, William “Bill” Adams; four sisters, Junie Manese, Rebecca Young, Mary Triplett, Loretta Griffith; and a brother, Sheldon Adams.
Services and interment will be private.

John C. Shaw (1946-2009)
John Cyril Shaw, 62, of Paintsville, Ky., died in The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, after a long illness.
Mr. Shaw was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Madison, Boone County, W.Va., and was the son of the late Carlos R. and Mary E. (Price) Shaw.
Mr. Shaw was a successful businessman and health-care administrator whose poor health forced him into early retirement several years ago. He was a member of Mayo Memorial United Methodist Church in Paintsville and O’Dell Lodge 115, the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies and Beni Kedem Shrine Temple. He was a dedicated husband and father.
His wife, Linda D. (Fitzpatrick) Shaw, a loving wife of 43 years, survives him as well as three children, the Hon. Jonathan C. Shaw of Paintsville, Dr. Charles P. Shaw of Henderson, Ky., and Amy L. Shaw-Connors of Alexandria, Ky. His brother, Jerry R. Shaw (Mary Ann) of Parkersburg, W.Va., and sister, Nancy V. Lamm (Gary Ray) of Asheville, N.C., also survive him.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and all day Friday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, W.Va., with Kenneth Mitchell officiating, with visitation an hour before the service.
Graveside Masonic rites and interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Boone County.
Jerry “J.B.” Dowdy
Jerry Benton “J.B.” Dowdy, 76, of Flatwoods, formerly of Cannonsburg, died Wednesday at his residence.
His wife, Joyce Boggs Gartin Dowdy, survives.

Nancy Isaacs Stanley, 68, of Hitchins, died Wednesday at her residence.
She was born April 22, 1941, in Hitchins.
She was the wife of Donald Stanley of Hitchins.

He was born July 3, 1926, at Epworth.
