Mary Gaines Cartinhour Hearne - 1910-2009

Mary Gaines Cartinhour Hearne, 99, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Ashland, died at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in The Forum at Brookside in Louisville.

She was born March 21, 1910, in Lawrenceburg, Ky., a daughter of the late Emmett Benjamin and Mabel Major Cartinhour.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Hearne, who passed away on May 25, 1982; and a brother, Benjamin “Buz” Cartinhour.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ashland, Ky., and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a graduate of Lawrenceburg High School and Transylvania University, a member of Chi Omega and a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are a son, Joe C. Hearne and wife Nancy of Wilmington, N.C.; a daughter, Nancy Hearne Jones and husband Harry of Louisville; grandchildren J. Kevin Jones, Steven Jones, Craig Jones, Ashley Miller, J.C. Hearne II and Mary Heather Hearne; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at noon Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Catlettsburg Cemetery by the Rev. B. Dinsmore Nisbet, retired minister.

There will be no visitation.

Services are under the direction of Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Jones, Steven Jones Sr., Craig Jones, Steven Jones Jr., J.C. Hearne II, Walter Major Jr. and Bill Cartinhour.

Paul W. Miller - 1929-2009

Paul W. Miller, 80, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

He was born April 9, 1929, in Ashland, a son of the late Paul W. Miller Sr. and Mollie Sublett Miller.

In addition, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Robert “Bob” Lucas; and a stepdaughter, Beth Lucas.

He retired after 20 years service with the United States Air Force and 25 years with Armco Steel. He was a Christian, a member of Elks BPO Lodge 350 and Poage Masonic Lodge 325, F&AM.; He was a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are his wife, Shay Barrett Miller of Ashland; a son, William Scott Miller of Ashland; a daughter, Cheryl Hill (Tussey) and her husband, L.B. Tussey, of Ashland; a brother, Richard Miller of Ashland; two sisters, Phyllis Clemons of Florida and Cookie Hall of Ashland; grandchildren Chris “Totem” Hughes, Josh “JoBo” Hughes, Summer Hill, Samantha Miller, Audrey Miller, Chase Miller and Shan Weinfurtner; and great-grandchildren Tyler Hughes, Taylor Hughes, Conner Hughes, Arianna Hill, Lindsey Weinfurtner, Terrick Smith, Taryn Smith and Mel Smith.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Suffragan Bishop Elzy Thomas. Military services will be by Ironton VFW Post 8850.

Malinda Cox Murray - 1961-2009

Malinda Cox Murray, 48, of Fayette County, wife of Elder C.J. Murray, passed away Tuesday in Central Baptist Hospital.

She was born Jan. 1, 1961, in Ashland, to the late David Henry Cox and Edna H. Bailey Cox. She was the office manager of Flooring Gallery in Lexington, a charter member of Fayette Chapel of Paris, a former PTA president at Deep Spring School, second vice president at Bryan Station Middle School, served on the SBDM council at Deep Spring School and was bylaws chairwoman for 16th District PTA.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Clark Andrew Murray of Lexington; two brothers, Sammie (Beatrice) Cox of Ashland and James David Cox, of Ashland; a half brother, William J. Brown of Texas; a sister-in-law, Anna Brown Cook of New Liberty, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a half brother, Ernest Brown.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at Fayette Chapel Church, 150 Skyview Drive, Paris, Ky., by Elder Arvil Murray Jr. and Elder Bruce Fyffe. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rolan G. Taylor Funeral Home, 289 S. Main St., Winchester and ane hour before services Saturday at the church.

Rosemary Dyer

Rosemary Dyer of Ashland went home to heaven on June 2, 2009.

She was the daughter of Rufus and Mary Jane Johnson Mullins and the wife of Drexel O. Dyer, who preceded her in death.

Her sisters, Lissa Baker, Judy Frazer, Ruthann Adkins, and a brother, Harrison C. Mullins, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sisters, Ruby Amburgey of Hampton, Va., and Doris Roe of Dayton, Ohio. She is also survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Dyer and her “adopted” daughter, Dessie St. John; five sons, Drexel O., Richard, John, Steve and Jeff; and daughters-in-law, Linda Dyer and Sally Dyer.

Rosemary is also survived by grandchildren Terry Dyer, Adam (Brandy) Dyer, John Floyd (Courtney) and Steven H. (Tabby) Dyer II, whom she raised as her special son, and her only granddaughter, Andrea Rose Dyer, who was her pride and joy. She also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Rosemary was raised in Elliott County, where she worked the family farm and delivered mail on horseback. She helped in the war effort by working at war-materials plants in Baltimore.

She was a member of Heritage Temple Baptist Church and deeply devoted to her Lord.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Tim York. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call after noon Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heritage Temple Baptist Church Building Fund.



Janet Clark - 1948-2009

Janet Matthews Clark of Flatwoods passed from us into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. Clark was 60 years of age, born Dec. 22, 1948, in Ferguson, W.Va., a daughter of the late Howard and Dollie Nelson Matthews.

Also preceding Janet in death was a twin sister, Judy Ernest, in July 2008.

She was a member of Normal Presbyterian Church and attended Catlettsburg Presbyterian Church. Janet was baptized in 1994 at Chadwick’s Creek Baptist Church. She loved to enrich her life by reading and studying the Bible.

Surviving is a loving family including her husband of nearly 41 years, John A. Clark; two sons, John (Rebecca) Clark of Catlettsburg and Michael S. (Jennifer) Clark of Greenup County, Ky.; two daughters, Allison M. Clark of Flatwoods and Amy M. (Toby) Smith of Lancaster, Ky.; a sister, Sue Ann Simmons of Springfield, Mo.; and three handsome grandsons, Joey Clark, Justin Clark and Michael Clark.

A funeral service of solemn remembrance will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2009, at Catlettsburg Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Richard Brown will offer a message of comfort and reassurance. Final rest will follow a committal at Ashland Cemetery.

George Russell - 1923-2009

George Russell, 86, of Flatwoods, Ky., died June 2, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born May 10, 1923, in Pedro, Ohio.

He was a tile sorter with Caryle Tile Co. in Coal Grove, Ohio, was a Christian and of the Baptist faith. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Deere Russell of Flatwoods; a son, Stephen (Shirleen) Russell of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Robert Russell of Columbus; a sister, Ann Markin of Coal Grove; two grandchildren, Stephen Russell Jr. of Lexington, Ky., and Jimmy Russell of Columbus; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today, June 4 at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by the Rev. Tom Stephens.

Gregory Dale Jordan - 1975-2009

Gregory Dale Jordan, 34, of South Shore, Ky., and Portsmouth, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the residence of his mother, Eva L. Stockham of Portsmouth.

He was born Feb. 18, 1975, in Portsmouth, a son of Rodney C. Jordan of South Shore and Eva L. Stockham of Portsmouth.

He was a member of the Ironworkers Local 769 of Ashland, Ky.

Additional survivors include his stepmother, Robin Reed Jordan of South Shore; a special friend, Terry McNeely of Portsmouth; two daughters, Sarah Jordan of South Shore and Isabella Spencer Jordan of Wheelersburg, Ohio; four sons, Seth and Luke Jordan of New Boston, Ohio, and Gavin Jordan and Ethan Jordan of South Shore; a sister, April Jordan of New Boston; a stepsister, Shawana Frazee of South Shore; a brother, Rodney L. Jordan of South Shore; a nephew, Colin Marshall of South Shore; and four nieces, Hailey and Hannah Marshall of South Shore and Payton and Oksana Jordan of Getaway, Ohio. Also surviving is his grandmother, Martha Guilkenson of South Shore, and several aunts and uncles.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Edward Guilkenson, Mary Farmer and Cecil and Catherine Jordan; and a stepsister, Aleisha Frazee.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore with the Rev. Raymond Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Harr Cemetery on Ky. 2 in South Shore.

Elizabeth Marie Isaacs Rogers - 1921-2009

Elizabeth Marie Isaacs Rogers, 87, of Grayson, died Monday, June 1, 2009, in Cumberland Point Care Center in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

She was born Nov. 1, 1921, at Hitchins, Ky., a daughter of the late Henry Lincoln and Nellie (Caudill) Isaacs.

Also preceding her in death were her husband of 69 years, Vernon Rogers; three brothers, Charlie Isaacs, Bill Isaacs and Wylie Isaacs; and three sisters, Samantha Church, Larue Blevins and Catherine Knipp.

Her survivors include a son, James L. (Karen) Rogers of Grove City, Ohio; a daughter, Faye R. (Carl) Jessie of Medina, Ohio; two sisters, Edith Glancy of Grayson and Ruth Skaggs of Spartanburg, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Lori Ellen Rogers of Grove City, Ohio, and Jeff (Lisbeth) Jessie of Cleveland, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Delmar Rogers, minister.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rogers Family Cemetery.

Zelma Hamilton - 1912-2009

Zelma Logan Hamilton, 97, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Lewis County, died Saturday in Springs at Lake Point Woods Nursing Home in Florida.

She was born Oct. 29, 1912, in Lewis County.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Globe Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix. Burial will be in Hamilton-Mawk Cemetery in Lewis County.
