John Cumpston - 1918-2009
John Russell Cumpston, 90, a lifelong resident of Catlettsburg, passed away Friday morning, June 5, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mr. Cumpston was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Charles and Octavia Dial Cumpston. His wife of 58 years, Nettie K. Stewart Cumpston, preceded him in 1998. He graduated from Boyd County High School, retired from Armco Steel in 1983 following 41 years at the open hearth furnace and was a member of Steelworkers Local 1865. John enjoyed farming and caring for the wild animals on his farm.
Sadly left behind is an adoring family including two sons, Charlie Cumpston of Boyd County, Ky., and George (Brenda) Cumpston of Phoenix, Ariz.; five daughters, Alma (Mike) O’Neal of Catlettsburg, Ky., Pat (Mark) Mauger of Prince George, Va., Drexel Marie (Harry) Smith of Rush, Ky., Madeline Sue (Herman) Woods of Raceland, Ky., and Kathy Lynn (Tony) Sparks of Catlettsburg; two sisters, Genny Stewart of Flatwoods and Opal Penix of Ashland, Ky; 23 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are a son, Wade L. Cumpston; four brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. A message of comfort and reassurance will be offered by Pastor Mike Amos, with a message in music given by Pastor Jeff Ferguson. Final rest will follow a committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland. Grandsons will serve as casket bearers.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

William Hayes, 87, of Ashland, died Friday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Linzy Stone, 75, of Olive Hill, died Friday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
His wife, Sally Davis Stone, survives.

Anna Hayes - 1925-2009
Anna Ruth Layne Hayes, 83, of Betsy Layne, wife of Clarence Edward Hayes, died Thursday at her residence.
She was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Betsy Layne.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Betsy Layne Church of Christ. Burial will be in Layne Family Cemetery in Betsy Layne.

Robert Bowens - 1931-2009
Robert Lowell Bowens, 78, of Lowmansville, died Thursday in Lexington.
He was born Feb. 6, 1931, in Johnson County.

Effie Howard - 1927-2009
Effie Howard, 81, of David, died Thursday in Prestonsburg Healthcare Center.
She was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Hippo.
Her husband, Tilden Howard, preceded her in death.
