Phillip Alan Salyer (1953-2009)
Phillip Alan Salyer, 55, of Ashland, died Monday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born Sept. 23, 1953, in Ashland, son of the late Claude B. “Buddy” and Doris Wahneitta Scott Salyer. He was the husband of Tamra Beard Salyer, who survives.
He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Ashland and a 1971 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School. He graduated with a bachelor’s in business management from Ohio University. He was a member of the Ashland Tomcat Booster Club and the Ashland Optimist Club, was director of the Junior Football League and served on numerous youth committees. He was retired from Ashland Oil as manager of the payroll department.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bradley Scott (Rachel) Salyer of Georgetown, Ky., and James Dustin Salyer of Huntington; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kelly Jo (Michael) Hoormann of Nashville, Tenn., and Chelsea Virginia Salyer of Lexington; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Greg (Cheryl) Salyer and Brian (Sherry) Salyer, all of Ashland.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Steve Ruby. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Lambert, Ryne Salyer, Wes Salyer, Chad Salyer, Scott Sterling, David “Dirk” Payne, Rocky Gibbs, Richard “Dickie” Martin, Steve Gilmore, Steve Stewart and all members of the Ashland Optimist Club.

Raymond I. Klein (1923-2009)
Raymond I. “Ray” Klein, 85, of Catlettsburg, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born June 14, 1923, in Louisville, the son of the late Peter W. Klein and Mary Peterworth Klein. He was the widower of Virginia A. Stettenbenz Klein, who died on May 1, 1997.
He was an office services manager at Ashland Oil, where he retired in 1989. He was a member of Holy Family Church of Ashland and was a 4th-degree knight with the Knights of Columbus.
He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond “Rick” and Mary Ann Klein of Jackson, Miss., Paul G. and Mary Klein of Middletown, Ohio, Michael “Tony” and Cindy Klein of Breese, Ill., and Mark G. and Kimberly Klein of Ashland; five daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia “Pat” and Dan Lake of Catlettsburg, Bonnie and Ed Pettapiece of Lexington, Marie A. and Clyde Bolton of Kansas City, Kan., Rebecca S. and Glen Cole of Catlettsburg and Pamela Jo Klein of Knoxville, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bernadette Krabbs of Louisville.
A funeral Mass was at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church by the Rev. John P. Noe. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
Edith D. Maser Smith (1926-2009)
Edith D. Maser Smith, 82, of Clearwater, Fla., died Monday, June 8, 2009, in Clearwater, Fla. She was born Dec. 29, 1926, in Germany, the daughter of the late Friedrich and Lotte Jacka Maser. She was the wife of the late Thomas D. Smith. She was a Protestant and was a nursing aid in Clearwater.
She also was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Robert D. Smith of Columbus, David Smith of Flatwoods and Thomas Smith of California.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, with Dr. Tom Melvin officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Ruby Rayburn (1921-2009)
Ruby Gilliam Rayburn, 88, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord on Monday afternoon, June 8, 2009, at her residence.
She was born May 22, 1921, in Carter County, a daughter of the late John Milt and Abbie Nolen Gilliam. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She had been a faithful Christian for more than 68 years and was a member of Walnut Grove Community Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Thamer Rayburn, on July 19, 1990; a son, Oscar Rayburn; a grandson, Ralph Mitchell Lawhorn; two great-grandchildren, Jerrod Lawhorn and Mica Robertson; three sons-in-law, Carlos Conley, Ralph Lawhorn and Harold Parker; two brothers, Homer Gilliam and Lovell Gilliam; and four sisters, Dovie Gilliam, Louise Gilliam, Gertie Henderson and Geneva Littleton.
She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Bernice Rayburn and Arthur and Kathy Rayburn, all of Emerson, and Chalmer and Bonnie Rayburn, Woodrow and Pat Rayburn and Donnie and Kathy Rayburn, all of Olive Hill; 11 daughters and sons-in-law, Margie Conley, Doretta Webb, Loretta Parker, Diana and Mike Sammons, Nancy and Donnie Fannin, Rosetta and Earl Bond, Debbie and Phillip Reynolds, Garnet and Randall Nichols and Barb and Bobby Butler, all of Olive Hill, Shirley and Gary Dean of Wakeman, Ohio, and Linda and Patrick Taylor of Emerson; 70 grandchildren, 117 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James Gilliam of Knightstown, Ind.; three sisters, Lorene Porter of Knightstown, Betty of Mansfield, Ohio, and Tottise Howard of Charleston, W.Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill by Brother Roy Bryant and Brother Gayle Price. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery on Walnut Grove Ridge in Olive Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, all day Thursday and until services Friday at the funeral home.
Her sons will serve as pallbearers.

Stanley Ray Stephens (1957-2009)
Stanley Ray Stephens, 51, of Isonville, passed away Monday, June 8, 2009, in Elliott Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sandy Hook.
He was born July 13, 1957, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Darrell Stephens of Isonville and the late Wilma Jean Gilliam Stephens.
He was a Christian. He was a former manager of a mobile home park his father owned in Florida.
Besides his father, he is survived by his brother, Roger, and wife Renee Stephens of Isonville; a nephew, Jonathan; and a niece, Carly.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Hutchinson Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Thursday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.
Vena Jenkins (1907-2009)
Vena Lee Jenkins, 102, of New Boston, formerly of Argillite, Ky., died Sunday in Heartland of Portsmouth.
She was born April 29, 1907, in Carter County, Ky., to the Late Wallace and Cordia Glass. She was the wife of the late Wayne Jenkins.
She was of the Christian faith and a retired schoolteacher. She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and a member of the Scioto County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Emma Lou Jenkins of Portsmouth; a grandson, Brian Jenkins and his fiancee, Shannon Calcutt, of Charleston, S.C.; a granddaughter and her husband, Beth Jenkins (Greg) James of Galloway, Ohio; a great-granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth James of Galloway; and a very special niece, Luanne Wiget of Rosemount.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Parkes and Betty Glass; and three brothers, Stanley Glass, Homer Glass and Hobert Glass.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth by the Rev. Oscar Perry.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth.

She was born Oct. 20, 1964, in Ashland. Survivors include her husband, Brian Witkus.
