Donald Wendell Howell Sr. 1930-2012

GREENUP — Donald Wendell Howell Sr., 72, of South Shore, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born May 3, 1940, in South Shore, a son of the late Lester and Mattie Odessa Dunaway Howell.

A lifelong resident of South Shore, Don was a dedicated husband and father. He served the area as a lifelong farmer and an employee of Leet Lumber Co. for 22 years, after which he served as a custodian for Greenup County High School and McKell Middle School for many years until retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenup, and was a craftsman who had a passion for woodworking and music.

Don is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gertie Sue Bryant Howell; three children, Don Wendell Howell Jr. (wife Liz) of Garrison, Teresa Cordelia Cline (Arthur Sexton) of Quincy and Kami Sue Redecker (husband Aaron) of La Grange; a granddaughter, Madi Redecker; four stepgrandchildren, Lisa, Libby, Brittanie and Kodi; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; two  brothers, Junior Howell and Paul Howell, both of South Shore; a sister, Wanda Howland of South Portsmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was also preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. He was beloved by his family and neighbors. He will be greatly missed by all he had touched.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at First Baptist Church, 1116 E. Main St., Greenup, by Tom Melvin. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore.
