James Whitby Stone 1927-2012

CARTER — James Whitby Stone, 85, of Huntington, W.Va., died Sunday at his home following a brief illness.

He was born March 20, 1927, in Grayson, a son of the late Daniel Whitby and Nora Lee Hubbard Stone.   

James was a retired regional sales manager for Phillips Consumer Electronics Corp. He was a graduate of Prichard High School in Grayson and attended Georgetown College and Marshall University. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid member of the YMCA. He was also a member of Trimble Lodge 145, F&AM, in Grayson and was a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason. In March 1945, he served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Floreane Howard Stone; his parents, Daniel Whitby and Nora Lee Hubbard Stone; two brothers, Daniel Wadsworth Stone and Hubbard Nelson Stone; and three sisters, Nancy Lee Stone, Lucy Catherine Stone and Virginia Stone Wilson.

James is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Ruth Stone of Danville; a son, Daniel (Sarah) Howard Stone of Harlan; four grandchildren, Michaelã Stone of Danville and James, John and Hannah Stone, all of Harlan; a sister-in-law, Ruth Stone of Birmingham, Ala.; a niece, Carolyn Dyer of Lexington; and a special friend, Joanne Goodall of Huntington.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6 at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church in Huntington by the Rev. Chris Perkins. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Grayson Memorial Cemetery in Grayson.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.

Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements.
