Delmer H. Conn - 1922-2010

Delmer H. Conn, 87, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at his residence.

He was born May 29, 1922, in Tamcliff, W.Va., the son of the late Millard and Martha Fultz Conn.

Delmer was raised in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy from October 1942 through November 1945. He retired from Armco Steel after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Ashland First Church of God for more than 50 years and was a Scout leader for Troop 126 for many years.

Survivors inlcude his wife of 67 years, Betty Conn; two sons, Ronald (Phyliss) Conn of Jacksonville, Fla., and Michael (Jan) Conn of Ashland; a daughter, Adele (Watson) Mosley of Greenup County, Ky.; five grandchildren, David (Treveline) Conn of Sadieville, Ky., James (Maribel) Conn of Kissimmee, Fla., Sean (Pasha) Peffer of Marysville, Ohio, Lacey Conn of Lexington, Ky., and Stephanie (Bob) Davis of Xenia, Ohio; four great-granddaughters, Treya, Reese, Reagen and Madeleine; and two great-grandsons, Dorian and Braedn.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Ashland First Church of God by the Rev. David Lynch and the Rev. Mabel Johnson. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland and after noon Wednesday at the church.



Myrtle Paulette Williams - 1946-2010

Myrtle Paulette Williams, 63, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born July 8, 1946, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late James Vernon Helms and Martha Jane Hughes Helms.

She was a homemaker.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Eugene Williams, on Sept. 19, 2009; and a son, Johnny Paul Williams.

Surviving are a brother, Martin Leon Helms of Worthington, Ky., and a sister, Mary Blankenship of Ironton, Ohio.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland by Pastor Chuck McCormick.

There will be no visitation.

Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.



Mary Ann (Urban) McNally - 1929-2010

Mary Ann (Urban) McNally, 80, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in Wilmette, Ill., where she had been living with her niece and family since November. Previously, she was a longtime resident of Waynesboro, Va.

She was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Dr. Leslie D. and Margaret H. Urban.

She graduated from Ashland High School in 1948 and from Indiana University in 1952, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority.

After college, she lived for many years in New York City, where she pursued a career as an executive assistant at CBS. She relocated to Berlin, N.Y., with her husband, Alfred R. McNally, and there she worked as an editor at Book Creations Inc. Following her husband’s death in 1990, she moved to Charlottesville, Va., and later to Waynesboro to be closer to family. She was one of the original volunteers helping to establish the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s facility in Waynesboro and also a volunteer for the Waynesboro Public Library.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alfred R. McNally, and her sister, Dolores Jeanne Krog. Survivors include her brother-in-law, John A. Krog Johns and Carrie Krog Clark, and her nephew, John A. Krog Jr.

Arrangements are pending.



Clarence W. Wheeler - 1935-2010

Clarence W. Wheeler, 74, of Raceland, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at his home with his family by his side.

Mr. Wheeler was born Dec. 11, 1935, in Blaine, Ky., a son of the late Eskie M. and Amanda Jewell Chandler Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler was superintendent of inspection for 36 years at Armco/AK Steel. He was a member of the Flatwoods Church of Christ where he served for 28 years as an elder, taught vacation Bible school and Sunday school and had served as deacon prior to becoming an elder. He was a 1954 graduate of Raceland High School, was inducted into the Raceland High School Basketball Hall of Fame in January 2004 and was a Kentucky colonel. He loved dearly and took great pride in his grandchildren. He felt very blessed that his family were all Christians. He enjoyed woodworking.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kay Frances Stephenson.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet Stewart Wheeler; a son, Michael Wayne (Joy) Wheeler of Cookeville, Tenn.; a daughter, Beverly Gail (Greg) Conley of Flatwoods, Ky.; a brother, Charles “Buck” (Veronica) Wheeler of Raceland; two sisters, Delores (Bill) Huffman of Raceland and Carol Sue Trott of Columbus, Mich.; and five grandchildren, Alissa (Mark) Day, Susan (Justin) Newell, Jordan Conley, Rachel Conley and Kaitlyn Conley.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Flatwoods Church of Christ by minister John M. Brown. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Visitation will be at the Flatwoods Church of Christ from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services on Wednesday.

Chester Norton Hillman - 1914-2010

Chester Norton Hillman, 95, of Lawton, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, Jan. 24, 2010, at his residence.

He was born July 9, 1914, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late former Kentucky State Sen. Henry Watterson I and Anna Carpenter Hillman.

Norton was a Christian ane the oldest and a lifetime member of Olive Hill Methodist Church, where he served as a leader for many, many years. He was the owner/operator of a division of George Transfer Co. in Baltimore, Md. His terminal was at Pleasant Valley, Ky., and in 1979 he sold the business to the Transfer Co. and then retired.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Henry Watterson Hillman II and Barbara Fuller; and three brothers, Richard Hillman, Harold Hillman and John Hillman.

His survivors include his wife of 66 years; Thelma Armstrong Hillman; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Linda Hillman of Olive Hill, Ky.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Yvonne and Tom Brown of Louisville, Ky., Virginia Wilhaucks of South Fulton, Tenn., and Roberta and James Hillman of Olive Hill; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother and sister-in-law, James and Roberta Hillman of Olive Hill. He also leaves several other extended family members, church family, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Olive Hill with Brother Bob Burton officiating. Burial will be in Hillman Family Cemetery in Lawton.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill and an hour before services at the church.

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Wayne Horsley - 1919-2010

Wayne Horsley, 90, of Garrison, Ky., formerly of Ashville, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at his residence.

He was born May 8, 1919, in Greenup County, Ky., the son of the late Steve and Virgie Royster Horsley.

He was a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church in York, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1991; a son, Paul E. “Gene” Horsley; brothers Leonard, Estel and Vernon; and sisters Bessie McGlone and Roberta Horsley.

Surviving are sons Kenneth W. (Carol) of Groveport, Ohio, and Gary D. and Cecil R., both of Garrison; daughters Barbara J. (David) McMillion of Ashville and Rebecca S. Spaven of North Hampstead, N.C.; sisters Garnet Howard and Iona (M.J.) Smith, all of Lloyd, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home, 420 W. Main St., Ashville.

Private burial will be Thursday in Harrison Township Cemetery.

Gerald Teeter - 1923-2010

Gerald Teeter, 86, of Paintsville, died Sunday in Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

He was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Warsaw, Ind.

His wife, Irene Teeter, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Jeffrey Ginn - 1950-2010

Jeffrey R. Ginn, 59, died Sunday in the Cornerstone Hospital of Huntington.

He was born Oct. 18, 1950, in Vanceburg.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.

Florence Thornsberry

Florence Lyons Thornsberry, 68, of Sandy Hook, died Monday in Elliott County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sandy Hook.

Rachel Williams

Rachel Smith Williams, 61, of West Liberty, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Sterling.

Her husband, Harold Dean Williams, survives.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Henry Smith Cemetery in West Liberty.

Michael Arms - 1950-2010

Michael Raymond Arms, 59, of Leander, died Monday in Staffordsville.

He was born March 12, 1950, in Johnson County.

He was born Sept. 13, 1918, in Elliott County.
