Robert E. Ramey Jr. - 1924-2012

PORTSMOUTH — Robert E. “Bob” Ramey, 87, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

He was born Oct. 27, 1924, in Sciotoville, Ohio, to the late Robert E. Ramey Sr. and Ollie Haney Ramey.

He was a 1943 graduate of Sciotoville High School and remained proud of his undefeated football team of 1941. He was in Maritime Service based in Brooklyn, N.Y.; a graduate of officers’ candidate training and assigned to sea as an aid to the ship’s captain. He sailed the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific Oceans. In 1945, he entered the harbor of Hiroshima, Japan, a few days after the world’s first atomic bomb destroyed the city. In postwar, he was employed as sales manager of auto dealerships. In 1972, he purchased a Ford Motor Company dealership in Ashland and relocated to the city. He served as president of Ashland Auto Dealers Association and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel.

Bob retired in 1978 and moved to Key West, Fla., joining his son, Robert, to establish an auto firm in that city. He traveled to Lima, Peru, with the Miami Group Trade Mission. He also served as president for the Property Owners Association. In retirement, he wrote and published national stories of World War II. Also in retirement his hobby was researching documents, tracing his family from France to America, he also founded and was president of the Ohio Valley Property Management Group LLC.

Bob is survived by his wife, Loreen Ashworth Ramey of Sciotoville, whom he married in 1948. They were blessed with three children, Robert, Lorin and Vanessa; and two grandchildren, Orion Burnham and Olivia Biron.

All of Robert’s family would like to thank Bridgeport Nursing Home for all of their kindness in the past four months.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. today, June 19, 2012, at First Christian Church in Portsmouth with Pastor Janis Elliott officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.
