Charles Luther Dickerson

ASHLAND — Charles Luther Dickerson, 87, of Ashland, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in the VA Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.  

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Juanita Franz Dickerson of Ashland. They had two sons, Charles Marvin Dickerson, who preceded him in death in 1988, and Paul Allen Dickerson of Summit. They had two grandchildren, Jessica Nicole Dickerson Burke and Nathan Allen Dickerson; and three great-grandsons, Joshua Isaiah Burke, Caleb Isaac Burke and Christopher Wayne Burke III, all of Ashland. He had three sisters, Gloria Jean George of Flatwoods and Virginia Gallagher and Mabel Evans, who preceded him in death; and a brother, Clarence Dickerson, who also preceded him in death.

Charles was a member of Faith Church of God in Raceland. He retired after 43 years of service at Ben Williamson Supply Co. After retirement, Charles worked many seasonal and part-time jobs. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the 507th Airborne Division. He was a paratrooper and made 13 jumps during his service from 1943 to 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and in Normandy during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart commendation for his tour in Normandy, the World War II Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He served in Orland, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Ashland.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
