ASHLAND —
George Robert Johnson, 74, of Louisville, died peacefully at his home on Dec. 2, 2012, succumbing to a brain tumor.
He was born Feb. 12, 1938, in London, the son of Ted and Glennie Johnson. He attended London High School before graduating from Henry Clay High School in Lexington in 1955.
He attended the University of Kentucky, where he was initiated into the Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order and graduated in 1960. He received the Candler Court of Honor Award for his service to Kappa Alpha. He also served his country in the Kentucky Air National Guard.
He spent his career in highway and landfill construction, as well as surface mining, working for such companies as Rifle Coal, Addington Inc., Ruth Brothers, Greer Brothers and Bizzack Brothers.
He and his wife of 47 years, Margaret, raised their daughter, Maria, and son, Chris, in Ashland, where he was a fixture at Paul G. Blazer High School basketball games.
His hobbies included gardening, Kentucky history, UK sports, and after retirement following both J’town High School and Bellarmine University basketball. Most importantly, he served as the anchor connecting his extended family and friends.
He was a longtime member of Ashland First United Methodist Church and more recently, Jeffersontown United Methodist Church.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mayme Little Hamby, and a brother, Sonny Johnson.
He is survived and greatly missed by his wife, Margaret, of Louisville; his daughter and her husband, Maria and Todd Pottlitzer of Louisville; his son and Kappa Alpha brother, Chris Johnson of Lexington; his two grandchildren, Lilly Catherine and Logan Pottlitzer of Louisville; his sister, Teddy Lou Bryant of Bowling Green; four nieces and three nephews; countless friends and relatives; and his dog, Plumptious.
A celebration of George’s life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pearson Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, Louisville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at A.R. Dyche Memorial Park in London.
