John Riley Stephens 1934-2012

ASHLAND — John Riley Stephens, 78, of Ashland, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, in Kings Daughters Medical Center, after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Ashland. He was preceded in death by his father, Cris Stephens; his mother, Pearl Lewis Stephens Cundiff; his stepfather, Richard Cundiff; a brother, Jack Stephens; a son-in-law, Matthew Davis; and earlier this year, his loving wife of 51 years, Charlotte Ann Stephens.

John served a combined 23 years in the United States Navy and Air Force, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Following his retirement from military service, he worked at Ashland Community College for 22 years. He was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, a Kentucky colonel and an avid UK basketball fan.

Survivors include his son, Anthony Blake Stephens (Suzanna) of Ashland, and two daughters, Dena Stephens Snead (Bob) of Ashland, and Trena Stephens Davis of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Monica Walters, Martha Stephens, Aubree Snead, Sarah Stephens, Jessica Davis, William Stephens, Mary Stephens and Cadence Stephens; and two great-grandchildren, Ian Young and Noah Young.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 23, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Ronnie Mayes at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Rose Hill Mausoleum in Ashland. Burial will immediately follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
