William L. Kouns Jr. (1923-2010)

William L. “Bill” Kouns Jr., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at his home in Rosemount.

Bill was born to William L. Kouns Sr. and Ina Mae Callihan Kouns on May 29, 1923, in Fort Thomas, Ky. His dad was a retired Army military man with 30 years of service.

Bill retired from Goodyear/Lockheed Martin Corp. on Feb. 3, 1993, with 40 years of service. He was one of the first 13 operators hired to start up the former Porstmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He had served as a division manager and retired as a senior staff consultant to the general manager. He graduated from Prichard High School in Grayson, Ky., in the class of 1942 and then attended Memphis State University.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific and China-Burma-India theatres of operation with the U.S. Army. While awaiting orders for the eventual participation in the invasion of Japan proper, he drove in seven truck convoys, transporting materials from Ledo in India to Kunming, China, over the Himalaya Mountains, passing through Japanese-held territories. He was awarded three Bronze Battle Stars. His operational unit was the World War II version of the later-named MASH units in the Korean War. The mission assignment for his organization was to eventually participate in the invasion of the Japanese homeland. Bill’s unit was in a state of readiness on the east coast of China when President Harry Truman authorized the use of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. He strongly credited this action for, in effect, ending the Japanese war, thereby saving hundreds of thousands of both American and Japanese lives.

Bill was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church in Portsmouth. He was an ordained deacon. He had served as Sunday school superintendent and a choir member as well as a member of various other committees and performed special tasks as directed by the church. He was a lifetime Mason (50 years) and member of Trimble Lodge 154 in Grayson, was a Kentucky colonel, a Gideon and member of VFW and James Dickey American Legion Post 23. He and his family were charter members of Cook Road Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by twin brothers, Chester and Hester Kouns. Both died shortly after birth. A sister, Mary Ruth Jackson of Grayson, died in 2007.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Dorothy (Davis) Kouns, whom he married on July 3, 1956; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Anne and Richard Feldner; two granddaughters, Laura and Sarah Feldner, whom he purely loved; a niece, Jill Bentley; and a nephew, William Bruce Jackson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at F.C. Daehler Mortuary in Portsmouth. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor John Gowdy at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens on U.S. 60 East, just east of Grayson, with military rites by James Dickey American Legion Post 23.
