Wayne “Red” Bowling 1931-2013

ASHLAND — Wayne H. “Red” Bowling, 81, of Westwood, widower of Anna Mae Bowling, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

Wayne was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Boyd County, to the late Lloyd Edward and Noldie Lowe Bowling. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army, receiving a Purple Heart and combat infantry badge for his active ground combat. He retired from National Mine Service Co. as a welder and machine builder and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending a lifetime in the woods hunting and fishing.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Black Bowling; a sister, Nellie Hall; and a brother, James “Jimmy” Bowling.

Survivors include a son, Doug Bowling and his wife, Cheryl, of Catlettsburg; a daughter, Carol Franks and her husband, Ken, of Baghdad; three sisters, Martha Withrow (the late John Delbert) of Ashland, Asenath Toney (A.J.) of Catlettsburg and Delilah Hickman (Jody) of Oak Hill, Ohio; four grandchildren Angela Bowling, Doug Bowling (Stacy) and Anna Bowling, all of Catlettsburg, and Kenny Franks of Mountain View, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Madison Hatfield, Jackson Hatfield and Abigail Bowling; an aunt, Mildred Childers of Westwood; a special friend, Loretta Pennington of Westwood; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Chaplain Jimm Smedley. Burial with a military service will be in Black Cemetery on the Left Fork of Durbin.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Dougie Bowling and Kenny Franks; nephews Darrell Wayne Hall, Mike Withrow, James “Bub” Bowling and Scott Hickman; and great-nephews Jimmy Bowling and Cody Coon.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. (family at 5 p.m.) today and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
