Marie Bost Kephart - 1905-2013

FLATWOODS — On Jan. 31, 2013, Marie Bost Kephart died at her home at the age of 107.

She was born July 21, 1905, to Henry A. and Jessie Thatcher Bost, in what later became Oklahoma. Her parents were homesteaders in the Indian Territory, and her mother, Jessie, was the first woman to graduate from college there, entering while it was the Indian Territory and graduating after it became the state of Oklahoma.

Marie followed the family tradition of education by graduating and becoming a teacher. She married Francis Willard “F.W.” Kephart in 1926. They had two children, F.W. “Bill” Jr., now deceased, and Frana. After moving around the country during the Depression years, they settled in Ashland in 1941, where Marie enjoyed the hilly countryside, so different from the flat Oklahoma of her youth.

She was an active member at Calvary Episcopal Church, and when age reduced her mobility she continued her connection with the church community in other ways. Her lifespan encompassed enormous changes in the world. Born two years after the Wright Brothers’ first flight, she flew across the Atlantic on the supersonic Concorde. Her family was unusually long-lived, with her mother and her siblings all living into their 90s, but she beat them all, and was lucid enough to win family Scrabble games until the last few years.

She is survived by her daughter, Frana Dupree of New Haven, Conn.; and five grandchildren (including me, Charles Dupree, whom she taught to read). Her sixth grandchild died tragically early in life. She also has seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday Feb. 11, 2013, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Ashland.

Commemorations may be made in her name to King’s Daughters Medical Center-Home Health or the Calvary Episcopal Church General Fund.

Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
