Barbara S. Shields 1949-2012

ASHLAND — Barbara S. Shields, 63, of Ashland, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.     

She was born June 10, 1949, in Knox County, the daughter of the late Tucker and Mary Ellen Bays Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Mayme Campbell, Selma Peters, Willie Simpson and Mildred Soots.

Barbara was a member of Booneville Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, worked in the nursery and was very active with the children’s activities. After moving to Ashland, Barbara was active in First Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 43 years, Harold Richard Shields of Ashland; sons Richard Scott Shields and Jason (Megan) Shields, both of Ashland; daughters Robin Michelle (Jeremy) Harris and Kristen Renee Shields, both of Ashland; brothers Sawyer (Ruby) Smith of Coatsville, Ind., Charles B. (Georgia) Smith of Coatsville, James B. (Jean) Smith of Harrison, Ohio, and Everett Hanley (Sue) Smith of Coatsville; sisters Shelby Jean (John) Messer of Gray and Mavis Dean (Eddie) Grubb of Lexington; and two grandchildren, Lexi and Brayden Harris. Additional survivors include a host of loving extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Darrell L. Clark and Pastor Joed Rice.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at the funeral home.

A second visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at Hampton Funeral Home in Barbourville, with a graveside service immediately following at Burch Alford Cemetery by Pastor Denvil Taylor.

Contributions in Barbara’s memory are suggested to the Philippines Missionary Fund, c/o Central Baptist Church, 600 29th St., Ashland, KY 41101.
