George W. Carraway - 1939-2010
George W. Carraway, 70, of Ashland, Ky., husband of Barbara Adkins Carraway, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, in the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
George was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Ashland, a son of the late Allen B. And Maude Els-wick Carraway.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Smith, and a brother, Richard Hatcher.
George was a retired guard with the Summit Federal Correctional Institution and also retired from Carpenters Local 472. He served as an aviation boatswain’s mate F second class in the U.S. Navy. He attended Ironville Independent Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time in his garage building furniture.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Tim Boggs of Ashland; two adored grandsons, Tyler and Hunter Boggs; and two special nieces, Susan Parsons and Rebecca Leake of Ashland.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Perry Young and Brother Thorny Artrip. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Joel Alan Merchant - 1956-2010
Joel Alan Merchant, 53, of Greenup, Ky., died Jan. 10, 2010, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 16, 1956, in Ashland, Ky., a son of Ruth Evelyn Haney Merchant of Raceland, Ky., and the late Wayne Joseph Merchant.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Edward Vinson Merchant.
He was a certified auto mechanic with Superior Chrysler and of the Methodist faith. He loved working with automobiles and built race cars.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Melissa Dawn Merchant of Winchester, Ky.; and a grandson, Aidan Michael Merchant.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by Dr. Thomas Melvin. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Millard “Butch” Riffe Jr. - 1949-2010
Millard “Butch” Riffe Jr., 60, of Fort Wayne, Ind., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, in Regency Place of Fort Wayne.
He was born April 30, 1949, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Millard and Delma (Lucas) Riffe Sr.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. He retired from GTE/Verizon where he worked in circuit design. He was a stamp and coin collector and he enjoyed playing cards in the VA and fishing, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an adopted sister, Carolyn Sue Thompson.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Camille Wilczewski Riffe of Fort Wayne; two daughters, Dawn Michelle Jerrall and husband Brian of Clarkson, Ky., and Stephanie Renee Riffe of Uptown, Ky.; a stepson, Kenneth J. Lawless of Fort Wayne; a sister, Mary Anne Broughman and husband Freemont of Wurtland, Ky.; five grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Erie, Pa., on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Betty Mae Allen Seymour, 52, of Sciotoville, Ohio, formerly of South Shore, died Saturday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born March 9, 1957, in Portsmouth, Ohio.
