Harlan Ray Fleming - 1933-2012

GRAYSON — Harlan Ray Fleming, 79, of Grayson, passed away Nov. 20th, 2012, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 8th, 1933, at Willard, to the late Rev. Kenneth and Ethel Bayes Fleming. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nadine Fleming and a brother, William Clayton “Tater” Fleming.

Mr. Fleming graduated from Hitchins High School, received degrees from Berea College and Morehead State University. He did additional educational studies at the University of Kentucky as well as Memphis State University in Tennessee. He worked 38 years in the Carter County School System as a mathematics teacher, assistant principal and high school principal. He was the first principal of East Carter County High School where he served for 25 years before retiring in 1996. Harlan was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Gideon. Before becoming East Carter principal, he was active in many local civic organizations. After his retirement, he enjoyed international traveling, farming, home improvement projects, his family and dogs, Rugby and Rudy.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Martha Jean Lewis Fleming; daughters, Donna (Tom) Elliott of Grayson, Jill (Vic) Shackelford of Lexington and Jeanne Rae (Nathan) Hutchinson of Richmond, Ky.

He was very proud of his five grandchildren, Patrick Ryan Jones, Dustan Jones, Sydney Shackelford, Caden Elliott and Hannah Rae Hutchinson. Also, a sister, Lois (Dick) Stevens of Grove City, and a brother, John Paul (Marzella) Fleming of Grayson survives as well as many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the First Baptist Church with Minister Paul Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Grayson.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, and after 9 a.m. until service time at the Church in Grayson.

Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of the arrangements.
